From Nocturnal Universe project
Diabor was a name chosen deliberately.
A name born in screams and curses.
A word that cut through the roar of his searing flame. His home lay in the lands of the Southern Clan — the forests of Tanarael, one of the richest ecosystems of Nocturnal. Born in an age when the clans still roamed the woods in the shapes of wild cats, he was among the few who mastered the art of transformation.
In his youth, Diabor fell into an ambush set by the southern subspecies of the wolfrs. Contrary to expectations, he was not killed but taken captive. Diabor knew that territorial and ideological hostility between the wolfrs and the Twilight Guardians had endured for many centuries. Now he had the chance to experience it firsthand. He managed to break free and escape only when his magic awakened — but by then, both the mind and body of the young hunter had already been damaged.
Everything has its limits. Healing magic included. After a certain point, scars can no longer be erased. They remained as an eternal reminder of the hatred that had taken root in his heart — a hatred that would go on to change the world.
Among the wolfrs, the word Diavor was spoken only as a curse. It meant devil — not a trickster or a tempter, but a destroyer born of fire and blood. When the Twilight Guardians adopted the name, shaping it to their own tongue, it became Diabor. In time, the meaning was forgotten, and only the name remained — stripped of its origin, yet still carrying its weight. Almost none of the Twilight Guardians would later remember what the true name of one of the greatest riaels in history once was.
He became the second riael in history by overthrowing his own father. Diabor ruled for 811 Nocturnalian years and died at approximately 868 Nocturnalian years of age, as a result of betrayal.
In the Twilight tongue, riael means “ruler of all clans.”
During his reign, Diabor strengthened the bonds between the Twilight clans; introduced new branches of magic and techno-magical progress achieved through personal research and diplomatic relations with the civilizations of morphs and dragons. Ultimately, his effort, pressure, and charisma led to the rise of the Twilight Guardians as a sapient magical species — the founding of cities in forests; within mountains and glaciers; and the construction of the floating castle Korael.
Yet as brightly as he shone for the Twilight Guardians, he burned just as fiercely for the wolfrs. Diabor’s hatred turned into a war that engulfed not only his own clan, but others as well. Slowly, brick by brick, all ties collapsed, and in the eyes of his people the wolfrs once again became devils, staining their forests with their very existence. Diabor’s flame consumed the southern wolfrs — every last one — driving their subspecies to complete extinction. Along with them perished the few half-bloods who had been fortunate enough to be born alive.
Historical Facts
— Diabor was a black mage; however, his original discipline was combat magic. His most prominent manifestation was the hereditary blue flame — a symbol of the power of the Wildfires.
— He was infected by the Parasite, yet managed to enter a symbiotic relationship with it through black magic. The infection was clearly visible in the form of black chimerism.
— He favored a ritual knife, which he crafted himself from the fang of the southern wolfrs’ pack leader.
— Rumors persist that he fed on the flesh of captive wolfrs.
— Despite his hatred and mania, he spared the life of one half-blood. He named him Kai and raised him as a devoted hound, obeying any command without question.
— Diabor maintained a romantic relationship with Kai; however, due to his beliefs, all of Diabor’s offspring were exclusively pure-blooded.
— Diabor was killed by Kai after the execution of the last surviving southern wolfrs, including children. Kai remained loyal to his love for the tyrant and was slain by the royal guard beside Diabor’s body, in Diabor’s chambers.
