I've been wanting to look for another job for a while but it was so exhausting working there I couldn't do so, so at least this will give me a chance to find something new. I'm worried about my prospects but the cruelty of 'Hey, hope you're ready to completely upend your life!' on Christmas Eve was more than I could bear

That’s just brutally crude, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they did it to pad their year-end bonuses. I really hope things work out for you. No one should be told they’re being let go or fired on Christmas Eve.

If I remember correctly, you don’t usually take commissions? It might not be a steady source of income, but it could at least help cover groceries.

It was a situation where "we'll try to move you to another shift" rather than being totally fired, but choosing to do so the way they did really left a wretched taste. While I had known it was coming (but not when), most of my coworkers were surprised with the news their lives were being upended.

I'm not currently planning on opening commissions again because I cannot reliably get them done, but I may make some adoptables.

Hope you end up in a better spot in a long run. Being treated as expendable sucks.
