I've noticed a lot of artists I'm around took on too many commissions, and are really stressed and miserable about it. Just the past few weeks a bunch of them have come out and admit they took on way too much work. They get stressed and close up, hide away, and the artist you really like can't even show their face because they're under so much pressure. They caused it themselves, and they should be lucky for the commissions they get, but it's still a problem a lot of us have to deal with so I felt like posting about it!
Writing things that are honest and supposed to be nice and helpful just make me feel preachy. But I actually do it helps because it's happened to me too and I hate it.

Well like you mentioned artists are in a business, and if they are, they should be professional about how they work and what they do! And being rude or mean or condescending isn't very professional, and if someone doesn't like how you act, they can simply take their business elsewhere, because they have a massive amount of options out there!
That's all it really takes! X3 It's a pretty simple thing, but lately a lot of people have been messin' up and not doing that. Sometimes I guess messin' up like that you learn how much much you can and can't handle, and can at least be sure not to do it again.
But I know even taking one commission you can still feel a lot of this stuff too, I think. X3

I do so love when you post these creative insights. Just like each of your diaries in the past, there is always so much to gain from the way you combine doodles with honest thought and insight.
I hope you didn't feel preachy in the way you put ths one together. Truly, it comes off more as an "FYI" instead of a, "I think, therefore you should, too" post. If anything, I could see something like this hanging up on someone's wall as a "Motivational Poster" to remind them of what is important and how they should be aware of a few things when it comes to the aspect of taking on commissions and/or doing any other sort of project in which goes beyond the scope of themselves.
Again, great job in shedding light on a topic that haunts many a talent here on FA, as well as other creative nooks both OL and RL. :)

Haha, ever since I saw a bunch of other people doing this, and one person even feeling worse having to refund over $800 worth of commissions, I figured maybe it'd be good to post something since I can relate with a lot of these situations. And then even in that time another friend mentioned feeling a loss for all his desire for art, and then another posting about refunds, and just yikes. That's only three this past week! So hopefully bein' open about all this is good for those sorta people.
Oh wow! I guess we had similar situations. X3 I wound up with an extra 20+ commissions this summer too, and knowin' you have so much work and time ahead, more than you really anticipated, just makes ya feel really trapped, even if the commissions can be fun, sometimes you take on way more than you plan and messes happen. I hope we'll both only be in happy commission situations from now on!
Hehe, I'd think even just plain art can totally feel the same way. X3 You might want to make something, or want to improve, or have some sort of desire that leaves you unhappy and stressed, and it really sucks. D: Especially if you keep having the same struggle for a long time. Hopefully things eventually get a little easier! (:
So many people needs to understand this stuff!
Me too really. D: I haven't been posted because work has left me so little drawing time and I'm working on ONE commission. I'm thinking about only offering sketch commissions that I can finish in a night or two. =3 I also post on my own blog way more frequently than here, because there's not the guilt associated. Bleh, guilt is dumb!
Drawing should always be fun though.

Haha, I'm glad I follow your blog so I can see lots of cute, fun doodles! It's awesome having a place like that where we can be ourselves. (: Though, if you can finish that commission then it'd make everything better too. X3 And yeah, maybe smaller, quick sketches would be way better!
I want to personally thank you for posting this. I only wish this was posted a year earlier, seeing as I was a victim of fraud, I paid for a commission that I never received, and that artist eventually blocked me and removed me when I asked him about the status of my commission, months afterwards.
I hadn't even noticed it much until this year! But actually, after I posted this, I wondered about where a friend of mine disappeared to after taking on a bunch of commissions. He seemed like such a nice, friendly guy! But then he just dropped off the net. I'm not sure if he was just overwhelmed recieving too many commissions and finishing art school / getting a job, or if it was a scam. If your guy's still on FA I'd bug the heck out of him at this point. X3 Post journals and make multiple accounts so people know what he did, at least so it doesn't happen to anyone else. Even though I know that's not the gracious way to go about it. X3
I can relate even though I'm a free artist. I recently undertook several requests, but I'm quite slow and haven't been able to keep up with them (since life has made other demands). After I'm done with these, I'm probably gonna pause on them for a while, since I haven't even had time do draw my own art and develop my own characters.
Thanks for your words of wisdom.

I know what you mean! Requests are just like commissions, you want to finish your work for the other person, but all these same problems can happen. I definitely plan to take a long break too. X3 I feel so bad I've had to stop my work, so I hope you won't have to for much longer!
Wow! Sounds like a bunch of good tips. It's neat how you were able to collect your ideas on the subject and present 'em in such a cool, easy to read way! And some very nice encouraging thoughts too, which oughta make people feel better to hear if they're feeling overwhelmed by it all. It was really nice of you to do this to help other folks in this situation! It sounds like a really tough spot lots of people get into, and I spotted a few besides you too, so this is definitely a helpful thing for a bunch of artists. In any case, I'm especially glad that you've made it most of the way through your big bunch of commissions! :)
I agree with all of these, except that it's unheard of to live off your art. I've been living off my art commissions for many years now, though I barely make enough to pay rent and food, it's still a living for me! Also for a few friends of mine :3 It's comforting to read this, though, and I have been fortunate enough to work with many patient commissioners. I try to always do a little extra for them if I've made them wait longer than I thought I'd have to, patience always gets rewarded.
Ah, well you're only the third furry artist I know that's done so! 8D And I guess that's just what I mean - it's not a very common practice, and most people might not know artists that do. (: But it's great if people can, and nice to reward people who haven't been rude or impatient and all that too!
