The folks who make Con*Tact Caffeine are retiring the artwork for their "Sex Panther" caffeine-infused soap (Clove, Star Anise, Pepper, Rose, Leather, Balsam, Musk, Citrus, Vanilla), and they asked me if I'd do a new label! I happened to have the time (there's usually always at least a little time to draw leopards.) Here he is in label form, lovingly wrapped around caffeine-infused soap (and ready to lather. ;] )
Next weekend, you'll be able to find him at the Con*Tact Caffeine dealer's table at AnthroCon!

Ok, as cool as this is, they realize they're liable to get sued because they're using characters that are copyright Hasbro and making money off of it, right? Blotch, I love ya but are you REALLY sure you want to have anything to do with people who use other peoples copyrighted artwork without their explicit permission?
This "The artwork on our labels was custom designed for us, and Con*Tact claims no affiliation with Hasbro. These are produced for fans to enjoy all things pony!" does not make it legal to make money off of someone elses intellectual property.

I think you've stumbled into the rare exception to out-right "corporation greed/aggression," here.
I am not really into the whole "pony" thing, but I have the vague notion after hearing somewhere that Hasbro and the creators [Lauren Faust] of the new Friendship is Magic franchise encourage fan involvement in the brand. (Just check out Lauren Faust's DA page--you can see on her latest journal how excited she is about the fanmade Bronie documentary's kickstarter project getting almost $350,000). That's why you have handmade ponies from the show on eBay selling for $3,000 (reputedly to the creators of the show,) and so many people creating fan products.
It's an interesting approach on Hasbro/Hubworld, and a likely a successful one. The show accepted its market and resulting Internet subculture, and ran with it. I suppose that's now one of the reasons it's been so hugely popular.

I just feel conflicted. On the one hand, I've had a heightened awareness of things like IP and such since becoming a part of this fandom and ever since I got to know the folks over at Runic Games. My mate is an author, as well, so part of me gets a little frustrated when I see people profiting from someone elses art.
On the other hand, i'm aware of the other side of the argument (the one you posted).
I guess as long as Hasbro is cool with it (apparently) I really don't have a place to say anything. I won't deny that i'm more interested and impressed with the fan stuff than with the official stuff. I just worry that at some point, people will start making SO much off of it that Hasbro will decide that they change their mind. It's a fine line the fandom is walking and while I hope it works out for the best..you know how people are.
give em an inch, and all that. At any rate, thanks for replying to me. I hope I haven't offended anyone with my remarks. I'm a vet of the Animaniacs fandom back in the 90's and saw WB go from a Hasbro-like stance...to inclusive and finally to where they were shutting down peoples websites and sending C&D letters because people went from doing fan stuff to raking in a lot of money using WB's characters.
I just don't want to see that happen to the fandom, that's all.

Some large companies (Dreamworks, & Disney, for example) actively hunt and shut down anyone who profit, or compromise the image of their intellectual property. You're always going to have companies that react defensively like that, as it's within their rights, and within their financial capacity to attempt to police content.
As I understand it (and I could be off base, as I've only a cursory interest in this,) Hasbro owns the idea of "My Little Ponies," and the classic characters... but not actually any rights to most of the new characters, or designs. Hasbro initially refused to create any merchandise for the FiM franchise, taking the same stance WB did with Animaniacs-- "We don't understand this fandom that's sprung up, we're shutting this down." However, the show's creators encouraged fans, so fan-made products have exploded to fill the void. Ultimately, fan-content only serves to advertise and promote the original product--the show. (Really, I can't even imagine the number of people who said to themselves, "what's all this pony hub-bub I keep seeing on every corner of the Internet? I should check out the show. [Wow, now I'm a bronie.]")
FiM is a phenomena, thriving, healthy, and certainly a money-maker for everyone involved. I suspect the pony fandom will survive for a long time with the blessing of Hasbro, and the show's creators. Really, Hubworld and Hasbro probably couldn't be happier that the show has taken on a life of it's own, with rabid, product-hungry fans. Now that Hasbro is making actual merchandise based on the characters, they are getting part of the pie they didn't want to bake.
Furry, on the other hand, is primarily about original content, which makes it a unique Internet subculture in many ways. You can strip out all the TLK, Sonic, FiM, Pokemon, Animaniac, Dreamworks, Pixar, Disney fanart, etc, and you still have the fandom's original core keeping it together. We're all here for the idea of talking-animal-people, not necessarily a brand. If the industry isn't making that, we'll make it ourselves.
My two cents.

I just want to thank you for the insight. I honestly agree, I think I just worry too much. I really do appreciate you taking time out of what i'm sure is a pretty busy schedule to give me your viewpoint. For my part, I think it makes sense. I don't know if it's really a furry/brony thing to have that opinion, by the way. I always saw you as someone who probably understands the furry fandom a lot better than some furries do because you're both 'outside' of it and 'inside' of it, too. In other words, I've always seen you as someone who doesn't feel the need to use labels to describe themselves. I think maybe that gives you a less biased view of things.
Anyways...again..thanks. I think I really needed to read that..and before I start sounding like i'm gushing..thank you for all the awesome art..both of you :) (especially the roos <3)
