I was unaware of Gracie's gender overseas, that does not surprise me.

Nothing unusual when it comes to bringing Japanese games overseas. Some of the most known examples are Birdo (used to be crossdressing male in Japan then Nintendo decided to make it "female but we'll keep it ambiguous wink wink nudge nudge"), Cubit Foxtar (looks and sounds very effeminate which makes everyone confuse him for female when he's actually a guy) and above mentioned Gracie. Possibly the only subversion would be Vivian from Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. If we go by the Japanese version, her sisters refer to her as a "he" which caused a lot of confusion and debates over whether Vivian is a male or female actually. If they paid more attention to the game, it's already confirmed she's a girl, but the reason her sisters refer to her by the wrong gender is because in Japan, doing so is considered offensive and rude to the person one is referring to.
