How did Val grow during the book? Besides getting exposed to other ways of life and witnessing violence, I don’t think he really changed much—or would behave any different in the future.

Val's passionate connection to Eve was an experience that changed him, especially in contrast to his previous relationship. What he shared with Eve, albeit brief, will inform his future choices of and relationships with women.

At the beginning of the book Val is living day to day, taking jobs if/when they come. This is in step with how most people survived the depression. Planning for the future took a backseat to surviving the day. By the end of the book Val is envisioning a future with Eve. He also talks about someday painting the faces and places he sketched during his travels. Val (and the country) are looking beyond the next day. That feels like growth to me. (less)
