She lost her identity & self-respect that summer & hadn't recovered, so when he called she went out of old patterns, but this bizarre encounter broke the spell. (less)

I am halfway though, and I don't care about the characters yet. Very unusual for me with Ann Patchett. Anyone else find this was the case? I've been reading glowing reviews. I'm not feeling it -- yet.
