Spoiler alert--but question: how did Lagardie die at the end? It says that he had bitten off his tongue. Why? She didn't get him with one of the potassium cyanide cigarettes, I assume, because that was his trick.

Why did Philip Marlowe figure out the name "Lester B Clausen" when the first time he visited the hotel? I couldn't find any sentences that he found out the full name of that hotel manager.
