Fated Destinies #2

The Broken Mate

Rate this book
Have you ever felt like there was something missing inside of you?
I have.
It turns out that missing piece is a big, furry, and bratty wolf.

As if navigating this newfound part of me wasn't strange enough, trying to communicate with a beast who is obsessed with a certain spot in the woods and the intoxicating scent a male shifter left behind is driving us both crazy.

I’m hoping to keep us going long enough to help my best friend Kera navigate her new role as Alpha of the Cerberus pack, but my wolf has other plans.

Once she discovers our fated mate, the morally gray and sexy as hell hunter for the Fenrir pack, I’m on a ticking time clock before the moon sickness takes over.

Add in the fact that there is some sort of blood debt on my head and hunters from the various packs are being sent to kill me, things went from normal to totally insane faster than I could imagine.

I just discovered my wolf. Now I need to find a way to keep us both alive.

Each book in the Fated Destinies series is a full-length novel told in dual POV where the main hero and heroine get their HEA. This steamy series offers spice without sacrificing the plot. These books do end on a slight cliffhanger once the individual plots are resolved. Scroll up now and start reading to find out how these fated destinies are interwoven into the overall series.

The internal relationship between the girl and her wolf was way more interesting than the actual romance, unfortunately.

The romance felt like a wet pool noodle - the squeaking sounds give you the ick but also you hang on to it because it is easier than swimming away. I'm not sure why I kept reading. I wasn't interested in the FMC in book one, not sure why I thought a whole book of her would make it better. I was way more interested in the larger plot, but it isn't enough for me to continue with the series.

…the female main character is insufferable. The author said in the first book they hate miscommunication but it is large and in charge for this book. Also, the author writes intimate scenes in such an awkward way. There is hardly any build up and the focus is so technical. It’s like the equivalent of when a guy rubs your labia lips thinking it’s gonna feel good for you and just gives you awkward rug burn.

In response to the review that states a manwhore is paired with an 18 year old *child* - for one thing, at 18, you aren't a kid anymore. For another, Skol isn't that much older, and grew up in a society where relations aren't viewed the way most of our society does (it's normal, discussed, and an open topic. I mean, really). Plus, she even states she was already sexually active. Consent is actually a BIG thing, and Skol was AMAZING.

Okay... on to my actual review:

I'm so glad that Heather decided to write these stories! I'm in love with all of the characters and absolutely cannot wait for the next one to come.

There is an excellent recap of the first book at the beginning - so you don't have to read it in order (though I highly recommend you do, it'll still make more sense). There is also a giggle worthy dedication.

Coral is a young woman, really trying hard to come to terms with her new life. She finally gets to shift into her wolf... and is forced to stay that way for months. That's where we start off in this story, as Coral is trying to learn how to speak to her wolf, and find a way they can communicate. When she realizes that she has a fated mate - Coral has to decide where her loyalties lie, and what she is going to do.

While miscommunication is never my favorite trope, it was well done here (in the sense that it was between friends, and for a good reason). Coral and Kera are just wonderful together, and I love them as best friends/found family. I'm so happy I still got to see Sage and Maddock, though I'd love to see them more. And I have to say that Skol was a great character, and just a fun contrast to Coral in every way.

So in this book, you've got found family as always, grumpy guy versus sunshine, romance, and some spice! Plus some new friends along the way 🙂

It does end on a cliffhanger (I mean, if you've ever read one of Heather's book you just know, right?), but not a horrible one! It just sets us up for book 3!!! I cannot WAIT for the next story!

This fmc is one of the most annoying and immature ones I have ever read and that says a lot. I had to DNF at 65% (that was so generous of me).

The writing of this book is bad and immature and screams Wattpad quality. The characters have no depth and the story line has been told so much it’s a cliche by now.

It’s full with misunderstanding, lack of communication and “secrets” that honestly not secrets at all.

Back to the fmc, she is insufrible. Her internal thoughts are as mature as a 12 year old brat. There is no chemistry between the leads and the MMc is not as annoying but it’s also a big cliche of a manwhore who doesn’t wanna settle but then he becomes a complete simp for the fmc (personality transplant?).

If I can put minus stars, I would.

I have been waiting, not so patiently, for this book since finishing the first book. It did not disappoint! Shifter romance, spice, loyalties, friendship, family, love, respect, and all of the elements needed to give the reader a very satisfying and entertaining experience! I read this in one day! The badass, strong female lead, Coral, had me laughing, empathizing, angry, and relating to her wide range of emotions. Any book that is difficult to put down and has the reader ignoring responsibilities is a great read! I miss the characters already and cannot wait for the third! Love the spice!

I love Coral and Skoll

There story was so chaotic and I never knew if they’d figure it out from one minute to the next. But Coral is kick ass and she takes matters into her own claws…teeth? Anyway, loved this one!

2.5 ⭐️

Let it be known, I’m only giving this 2.5 stars vs 2 stars because of the last 25% of the book.

I’m so confused by the vast majority of this book. It was just…uneventful. The love interests don’t really grab you until the last quarter of the book, things are happening but also not at the same time, and Coral just didn’t seem like herself. In the first book, you get snippets of her, but in this book she’s just confusing. She wants to be a doctor, she’s really good at strategic analysis of motives…none of it really just comes together to make a person that makes sense to me.

There’s a dystopian theme to the book with the purists, however, there’s been nothing NEW involving them and it makes you question if this purist angle is just fluff or if it’s even been fully vetted by the author. Why bring them into the mix repeatedly, yet also not really have them in the plot?

I also really hated Skoll continuously saying Coral was “broken”. It just set me off. She’s different, learning, disconnected from her wolf, etc. but she’s not broken. And until very far into the end, the lightbulb of that notion doesn’t fucking click with him. 🤦🏻‍♂️

The only things I enjoyed were how the author handled her finding out more about her mother (again, purist plot but nothing really being done?), the flashback Coral has, and how they handled sealing the mate bond in this book.

There’s so much potential for this series and plot, but this book was just mid throughout the entire thing.

Ohhhhh, boy. Another wonderful book from the ever talented Heather Carson. I cannot believe how great this book was- well, actually, I can…

I’ve been reading Heather’s books since her first YA trilogy and will forever read anything she writes. This book was absolutely fantastic and such a good continuation of this series.

These ones are so much longer, and this one was quite spicy. Got some good alpha energy going on, more of the Fated Mates together, and some wonderful progression for Coral.

THE ENDING. Heather. I cannot wait for the next book!

Listen, if emotional whiplash burned calories, I’d be shredded after reading The Broken Mate. The angst was so thick I needed a machete to cut through it, and the alpha male energy? Off the charts. Like, sir, please take several deep breaths and maybe a nap.
Our heroine went through it, and honestly, she deserves a vacation and a weighted blanket. There were moments I wanted to throw my earbuds across the room—but in the best way? It’s messy, it’s dramatic, it’s addictive.

Overall the story was okay. A bit droll in the beginning. Coral finally gets her human side back after months trapped in wolf. Okay, bad wolf. The bit droll part is Coral’s after actions. Coral just made me mad. Her poor wolf other half that she did what she did. And AFTER Coral was told to listen to her wolf, to build trust and relationship and Coral promising her wolf side of this, then she betrays her wolf. Her sister went through the whole mating process, there is no way that Coral would not have been told about mates and what occurs. None. It made zero sense that she had no information. She finally told her sister, there’s no way there would not have been some communication. Yes, sister is not a wolf so may experience things differently but still I can’t see these close sisters not talking for Coral to have had more information than she did. Made less sense that she kept making excuses to not tell Kera, who has always only known shifter life, and the cliché always interrupted when about to tell something important foolishness. So very unoriginal.
It was very gratifying that Kera called Coral put on it, told her how she talked her in her first place like she should have, they would not have been in the mess that they were in. Super points for that.
Coral, overall, I liked. She’s blunt and what she says and thinks is hilarious.
Skoll is typical alpha overprotective Neanderthal male. Coral kept calling him a caveman. Skoll’s inner thoughts that kept comparing Carol with his longtime bootycall WAS NOT IT!! Kept making comparisons with Lennette, who he shouldn’t even have in his thoughts at all after meeting his mate. He broke things off with that other female beforehand. Very annoyed with that.
How does Coral’s walking across the border of Skoll’s not yet former pack lead the it being justified her being killed? She’s Skoll’s mate.
Coral decides in the middle of climax, after adament about to shout out wanting to be claimed, Skoll doesn’t and expresses not now, the time isn’t right and cliche occurs with the oh no he doesn’t want to claim me bs. They’re in another alpha wolf’s home and territory, where they JUST ARRIVED AT, and had full on sex for the first time, eyes rolling, and no thought to he would want to be alone somewhere, to claim her while NOT IN SOMEONE ELSES HOME? Granted Skoll has an agenda “for her own protection” foolishness that Maddock told him was foolishness, but Coral not aware of it. Coral expressed wanting to wait, wanting to get to know him better, told him to wait, then he asks her to wait, and she has all kinds of problem. Hypocrite much? Can’t just asked why does he want to wait? Nope, have to have the what I consider the bratty behavior first. And he snuck all off the deal with his adoptive father, and she concludes that he doesn’t want her, despite knowing otherwise? knowing he did not claim her for other than that reason yet still concluded that is the reason why he left, because he didn’t want her, didn’t think she was good enough, and that other ridiculous cliche. I’m sick of this trope of women being portrayed as idiotic always governed by illogical thinking. Why is it always takes something dire having to happen or someone else having to say something before appropriate thinking occurs? Tired. Tired. Tired.
Things come together, understandings come, though what occurs in the end surrounding Koll’s adopted pack is off imo.
Overall fairly enjoyed the read.

Maybe I shouldn’t have been so excited about this one. That’s on me. We love a male POV chapter that starts with murder, but it somehow went downhill from there. Not for the victim, of course, unless we count as one now.

She said she was disassociating, like, a lot, but she was actually compartmentalizing. Disassociating would have her staring at a wall, or even reading a book about wolf shifters that she didn’t particularly love, in order to avoid reality. Not ignoring all her problems to actively assist in others’.

The FMC’s feelings on her mate flip flopped a lot between animosity and warming to him entirely with no reasoning or even weakly blaming on instincts. Just an entirely different attitude toward their relationship from chapter to chapter, on both on their ends, completely unprompted. It’s just hard to root for people you barely know who seem to share the sentiment with themselves and each other.

Her wolf is as annoying as she is, but is a bit funny sometimes, which is a perspective this author is skilled in. The guy, mostly wolf in mind, was too much of a martyr for his broodiness to be attractive. I honestly preferred his wolf. At least his black and white way of thinking had an excuse.

And you know what? She was a whiny martyr, too, now that I think of it. Maybe that’s where their fated connection is. Her friend keeps telling her how she admires her positivity, and I just kept wondering, ‘What positivity?’

The culprit in all the treachery is pretty obvious, but there was no satisfaction in correctly solving the case hundreds of pages prior, more disappointment that it took so long for them to do so.

Then he does the thing where he wants her to have a choice but ironically takes hers away by not giving her the opportunity to choose. She retaliates with same crappy behavior. Guess they are good for each other, after all, but not great for us.

The Broken Mate is Book 2 in the same series as The Witch’s Wolf and keeps the same core vibes — a fated mates, slow-burn paranormal romance 🐺✨ with grumpy/sunshine ☀️😤, growly alpha males 🐾🔥, touch-her-and-die energy 💀🖤, and a spicy M/F pairing 🌶️❤️. We’re still in a world of shifters and witches 🧙‍♀️🐺 set in a dystopian society ⚙️🌍 where pure-blood humans are separated from other species, which continues to add depth to the world-building.

This book focuses on a latent wolf and her hunger mate, and I really loved their dynamic 🫶. The FMC is strong and self-aware, claims what she needs without shame, and still allows herself to accept support 😌💞 — my favorite kind of strong FMC. Their bond builds slowly 🔥, and it feels natural rather than rushed.

It fits beautifully into the series 📖 and delivers emotionally 💕, while also leaving you curious about what’s coming next 👀📚. By the end, I was fully invested and already reaching for the final book 😅✨.

Seeing the MMC completely melt for her was everything 🖤🐺🔥 — and now I’m officially counting down to the last book 😍📚.

more like 3.5 stars!

this book was a fine sequel although i wasn't as big of a fan as coral as i was sage. maybe because of the first book, there were times where coral rubbed me the wrong way and she felt entitled/bratty so coming into this book, i wasn't as excited. that being said, she was a fine fmc and i think i saw her in a better light. i like how hard she tries to support kera as beta despite everything being fairly new to her and not knowing so many things. i like how she stood up to skoll and didn't let him walk over her despite his experience. i thought that their cave antics were funny.

got a little annoyed with skoll and his 'i know best' thinking but i'm glad that miscommunication was cleared up quickly and didn't linger. their dynamic was cute too esp. their wolves! i'm glad that the big bad didn't end up being nolan or gertrude (which i rly thought it would be) but someone else who wasn't too significant.

I liked this better than the first. I liked the relationship between Skoll and Coral more. They had more fun scenes like her going into heat in the cave. The other pregnant Hunter coming and giving birth in the cave. The struggle of Skoll keeping distance because he is going to sacrifice himself to his old alpha/dad for her. The blood debt also adds excitement. I also didn’t even mind the cat and mouse game they are stuck in trying to find each other initially. My biggest issue is that none of this happens until 200 pages into the book. There is so much exposition setting each character up that feels a little over kill. Like the Lone Pine incident was this pivotal thing in Skolls past that gets brought up again and again but we never learn what it was.

I probably should have DNF since I personally found the FMC annoying in the first book and kind of hated her in this book. She was so annoying, frustrating, and immature in my opinion and I really like her wolf so much more than the human side so she really wasn't for me. I think the MMC was ok but didn't show enough personality for me. I like that he tried to protect her. I dislike miscommunication which could have fixed things easily in both their cases so to me the plot wasn't strong enough. Definitely preferred the first couple and I had high hopes for this one but it didn't meet my expectations.

The first book was great(ish) so I eagerly went on to this one.
The first half was great and then the downfall started. Corals wolf was disgusting little brat and the mate too soo big bad alpha "i will kill everyone".
PLEASE
It put me off so hard that i struggled through it somehow with willpower because i wanted to see if there was details in the actual storyline.
Ugh why do women write other women so helpless and sad and weak?
"I can feed myself she said as she again opened her lips to the meat he held. "
Let me go vomit.
Just a wild thought MAYBE let the woman have some dignity for once.
I was so sad it took this turn.

awesome

This series keeps getting better. I love these girls! Sage and coral and kera are amazing! Sage and Maddox were fantastic but coral and Skoll were the growth pair. Both of them had things to learn, thing to evolve and things to change. I’m so damn happy that the bad guy wasn’t the bad guy. Ok it’ll make sense after you read because I had this whole thing I thought was the problem and I was wrong. Lol I love that!! And it’s Keira’s turn! I can’t wait to see what happens because I have a feeling it’s going to be amazing and shocking lol.

“my heart did a little flip as I looked at him. mine.”

maybe this is just me being confused as i often am, but during certain parts of the book i was so confused why the characters were on this mission or in this specific place or how any of this furthered the plot. but there were also times i became absolutely enraptured by each development in skoll and coral’s love and life story. they are undeniably fated and i love the little extra things the author adds to prove this. can’t wait for kera’s installment 👀

I absolutely loved Coral and Skoll’s story!! I’m pretty sure I shed so many tears because of how strong both Coral and Skoll are and how much pain they’ve dealt with. Coral and her wolf have been through so much and it broke my heart when we learned the truth about her mother! All of the twists and turns and stubbornness in this book was a rollercoaster and I really enjoyed trying to figure out who the actual betrayer was. I’m so excited for Kera’s story in the next book and I just really love this shifter world!!

This entire book from beginning to end was terrible. The stupid teenager, the self loathing hunter, the ridiculous “miscommunication troupe” which really it was just 2 stubborn characters who are too stupid to get out of their own way. I stopped reading multiple times because I just couldn’t take the melodrama. But I’m a sucker for punishment so I pressed on. Also, I don’t hate the author. I will continue to read the rest of the series. Book one was ok. I’m hoping book 3 is better. If not, I probably won’t finish the series.

Skoll was the slowest alpha mate in the history of fated males I have ever read about! Good grief! Give a girl an inferior complex when her fated mate is so slow to claim her. Coral is new to her white wolf and a blood contract has been issued for her death. No one seems to know why she must die. A life for a life. Skoll is determined to kill his adopted father the alpha with enough money, status and power to issue the contract, but why?

I. Freaking. Loved. It.

Of course I did, I love all of Heather's work. That's beside the point.

The Broken Mate is Book #2 in the Fated Destinies NA series and it's definitely my favorite so far. I loved Skoll and Coral's story so much. I'm glad that Coral and Sage both have their own strong wills and don't let these men tell them what's what. I did NOT see that blood debt twist coming, it was so good. That ENDING too! Ohhh Kera better get ready.

A sequel that outshines!!

I liked this one almost better than the first. Probably because we were able to see more of the characters we got attached to in the first one. I love how strong coral is and well rounded the characters are. This book had my heart captivated with its wrong place/miscommunication tropes. It was a bit more worldvuilding to get through in this one with the introduction of Skoll and the other packs before you got to the romance, but so worth it!

easy read

This book was slower than the first, and I thought a bit of a tease when it came to the romantic parts. The book isn’t clean or closed doors but it almost could be.

I thought the storyline was more interesting the. The first but it was so dragged out that I wa loosing interest. :/

Both characters are very likable. I did have trouble seeing coral as an adult at times being that she was treated as a kid in the last book and she can be very young sounding too
