Exploring dislocation and longing, Sarah Krasnostein dives into Peter Carey's literary tour de force, True History of the Kelly Gang, in this latest offering from the stunning Writers on Writers essay series.

Award-winning writer Sarah Krasnostein shines new light on the impossibly vulnerable Ned Kelly of Peter Carey's True History of the Kelly Gang. Carey, who moved from Australia to America, conjured Kelly after seeing Sidney Nolan's paintings of the bushranger at the Met. In this moving essay Krasnostein, who moved from America to Australia, interrogates notions of home, history, distance and identity in Peter Carey's Booker Prize–winning novel.

In the Writers on Writers series, leading writers reflect on another Australian writer who has inspired and fascinated them. Provocative and crisp, these books start a fresh conversation between past and present, shed new light on the craft of writing, and introduce some intriguing and talented authors and their work.

3.5 stars. An interesting short book on Peter Carey, focusing mainly on his Booker Prize winning novel, ‘True History of the Kelly Gang’. Carey’s inspiration for the novel was partly due to seeing Sidney Nolan’s paintings of the bushranger, Ned Kelly.

Peter Carey was born in Bacchus Marsh, Victoria, Australia and moved to take up residence in New York, USA, when he was in his 40s.

A wonderful reflective essay on Peter Carey’s Ned Kelly. The True History of the Kelly Gang provides material against which Carey’s relationship with his own father plays a significant part. Very thoughtful excavation of his sense of abandonment in all his works and the attraction of Kelly for an writer wanting to explore a country that he no longer lives in. I loved the recognition of the Nolan exhibition of his Ned Kelley Series of paintings at two points in his life.

“‘I have the good fortune,’ Carey told The Paris Review in 2006, ‘that my own personal trauma matches my country’s great historical trauma.’”

In Sarah Krasnostein on Peter Carey, multi-award-winning author Sarah Krasnostein charges into the brilliant Peter Carey’s history and his Booker Prize-winning novel, The True History of the Kelly Gang. Krasnostein’s engrossing essay is fascinating in the details she reveals and the wild similarities between herself and Carey. Was she always meant to discover Carey’s tale?...(to keep reading this review, go to https://www.otherterrainjournal.com.a...).
