You know how sometimes you read a book for a specific purpose regardless of how bad the story or the characters are??? You read a poorly planned thriller just for that twist in the end! ⚖️ You read a copy/paste fantasy just to give the feels you got from reading the original one!👸🔮
You read an unrealistic angst romance just to see the couples get their HEA even though in real life shit like this sends you to prison! ⏸️
Well I read these romances for the grovel I was promised grovel So I looked over the ridiculous plotline The fact that every single person in both families was awful😖 That the main lead is the epitom of a red flag 🚩🚩🚨🚨 That the h was the definition of a doormat 👞👢 And that the author was showing off her art knowledge (or how good she Googled art info) that the H started identifying what kind of couch he's sitting on when slumpped upset on one
I was willing to disregard all that because I was assured and promised that there will be grovel
Do you want to know how he groveled for lying to her? Manipulating her? Using her for revenge? Turning the world on her? Being the reason she was called gold digger? Slapped? Pushed? Bullied??
He spooned her in bed 🔫 🔫 🔫 🔫 🔫 me now
Oh well Another author to cross out from my "to read" list
Characters so insufferable, you'll wish for amnesia after reading. Man child hero, pathetic heroine, insta-love, melodramatic plot with corny dialogues.
Here goes nothing. I never learn. But I must admit I read some Uber enthusiastic review and I wanted to give it a try. I’m always sorry when I butcher some authors work because they worked hard and I know, I know. So now I try to be less emotional and more helpful with my feedback. I would love a plot where the hero is a vengeful cruel nasty man who uses the heroine and does not feel bad because he’s nasty and he does not know regret. The hero here has been engaged with the heroine older and more beautiful sister for three years, in an on off relationship where they fight, leave, have sex, reconcile, rinse repeat. He’s 32 btw not 18 so this makes him a lot of an immature guy. This last time though, he’s found out his fiancé was cheating on him and for months so he decides to gets his revenge by having sex with her lil sister that has had a crush on him since preschool. Yeah, that sad. He goes overboard and gets married to her in Vegas. They have amazing sex, oh she’s a virgin but it’s the best sex he had in his life and that’s ok, it’s fake as a pornstar tits but let’s believe it. HP had a thing for virgin turning out to be sex goddesses. Whatever. The day after she realizes it was a mistake and offers an annulment. But the hero wants to hurt his ex a little more and decides to go on a bit longer so he tells the heroine to stay married six months for PR sake. The things I really didn’t like. Beside the fact that hero screwing both sister is always creepy and yucky as hell. -the heroine is stereotypical loser and the author doesn’t stop reminding us over and over again. She’s a caricature. How many times do we have to hear how plain, frumpy, flat and unattractive she is? This author doesn’t understand the limits. Either her heroines are on the curvy side, then they are fat, or they are slender then they are boyish and flat. Really? The heroine is slender and not curvy but does it mean she’s unattractive for this? Basically 80 % of the models are flat and have no curves, so why are they attractive and she’s not. - she is an artist, she paints, but she looks like a homeless person. Stressing over and over again how frumpy she is, and dressing her as if she’s out of some kind of hippy community is well, too much. She goes out to lunch with an overall and a checked shirt over it, and her hair has a paint brush on them. Really? Cartoonish. She’s from quite a wealthy family but she doesn’t know that at home and while you’re painting you can be dressed in one way and when you go out on a fashion restaurant you should dress properly. This is not being herself, this is being stupid and really disrespectful because I believe that each setting has a dress code and you should respect it. She doesn’t need a makeover, only to know how to dress properly according to the place and people. It’s ridiculous and it makes her really shabby and grubby just because. - she’s a martyr. She is a codependent and can’t understand that family can be toxic and you can get rid of toxic and find your own people who love you, they’re called friends. She has one. Her family is abusive, they slap her, her sister is the devils spawn and her mother makes you want to be an orphan. The heroine always blames herself for the situation but is a passive aggressive. She’s the plain sister, the one no one notice, the one no one sees. Well, if this thing bothers her she should change it and not let other people throw shit at her repeatedly, I couldn’t feel angst because if you let people stomp over you time and again you deserve it. There are millions people in the world, go and find the right ones. No, she stays and blame herself and booohooo she sniffs because she is so plain and unwanted and unhappy. Yuck. Too much. - the hero. A failure. He’s not ruthless. He’s not damaged. He’s an immature selfish coward and I felt a lot of second hand embarrassment for his behavior. He uses the heroine to make her sister unhappy but then he doesn’t know how to get out of the situation he made and lets the heroine take the brunt of it, she’s bullied everywhere and blamed because she married and stole her sister fiancé, and he hides behind the bush because he has no balls, he doesn’t stay at her side until she’s basically broken. Because she is not a ballsy woman, she doesn’t answer back and she is passive with people. Man, it was a repeat of eye roll. His actions are the ones of a coward, he doesn’t protect her, he doesn’t go home because he is attracted to her, he doesn’t defend her from her family and even goes to lunch with her awful sister and family every Sunday while she’s at home alone, a home he forced her to be, his home. And you know why? Because he does not think she knows about the lunches. How coward is this. How can a man like him be attractive? He’s simply a loser. And she’s worse. She has loved him from afar but why does she? Is this some kind of Diana Palmer kind of thing? I never understood unrequited love, to me it’s simply not possible after 15 yo, because if someone doesn’t love you they don’t deserve you and it’s wasted time to pine for them. Never done after 11 yo when I had a crush on an older boy at school. And the hero is really unappealing, he’s been with her bitch of a sister that is evil, selfish and nasty so what does it tell us about him? The hero must be strong, he must react with determination and be sure of what he does, even when it’s wrong. This one was a sulky child. And the heroine forgave him too easily. To me it’s a big no no.
In all fairness, I should have DNFed. Actually I did, @ 81%. I couldn't care less how it ended. I found this surface level. Very much B-movie quality. That's not always a deal breaker as long as the story is entertaining in some way, like if there's interesting drama and/or angst (my catnip). The Wrong Husband simply didn't hold my interest. The characters were unexciting. Maybe it's me and this lingering reading slump I've been struggling with for weeks—months, really. But honestly, this author's writing doesn't work for me; I've read (or tried and failed) enough of her books to realize this. The dialogue is unappealing. A turn off. Towards the end of this one, I continually rolled my eyes. Everything the characters said and did was unconvincing. The only positive thing I'll say is that the author did at least manage to make me sympathize with the h. I got teary-eyed for a second. She was treated appallingly by almost everyone in the book. It was OTT. Poor girl. Btw, I hate it when heroines are REPEATEDLY described as plain. Way to ruin the romance. These are just my personal opinions. Some of my friends loved this book. Sorry, babes!
•Fake Mariage •Age Gap •Billionaire Romance •OW Drama •A**hole Hero
This book was recommend in a Facebook group and I was sooo excited to start reading. I love a**holes heroes with a lot of angst and grovel. However, the grovel is disappointing and the angst is just okay 😒. The MC is just cruel and an big idiot, I HATED the intimate scenes with the FMC sister. The MC is a man-child and the FMC deserve better even if she is a doormat. I was not able to like and to connect with the character’s who are insufferable. I was willing to disregard the ridiculous plotline but when the MC believes that he is in love with his ex even married with the FMC I LOST IT. You know what? The grovel is not disappointing because there is no grovel AT ALL. He manipulate her, he lie to her, she was bullied, slapped because of HIM.
If you like a cruel hero, a doormat heroine and a melodramatic plot and NO grovel, well go for it.
That was a quick read and I devoured it in half a day. It had angst and betrayal and some funny moments. The only thing I didn't like was that I needed the mmc to grovel and apologize before the fmc takes him back.
I freaking adored every second of this story. Maya Alden is quickly becoming one of my all time favorite authors. She's a queen at writing stories about sisters who are at odds thanks to the sad way they were raised by their mother. An evil mother who favors her "beautiful and talented" daughter over the other "less beautiful and basically nothing daughter, lavishing the favorite daughter with all of her love, and giving ZERO LOVE to the second daughter. This made such awesome angst in this story. Bianca was such a shitty person, an unfaithful person and a lying, manipulative asshole. Emilia was such a sweetheart, truly wanting (and never getting) at least a smidgen of love from her abusive family. Emilia was a true sweetheart, always looking out for others, and even when she (somewhat drunkenly) ends up marrying the EX boyfriend of her sister; She tries to take all the blame and framed Damian as the innocent party. And he LET HER. Turns out the whole world wanted Emilia's head for marrying Damian too. Poor Emilia wasn't just treated horrifically by her own family, she was treated unforgivably by Damian's family, the media, all of her acquaintances, and all of her co-workers. My heart broke for her. I enjoyed the uniqueness of this story, and I loved the journey of Damian finally falling for his new little bride, and seeing Emilia finally find true happiness in her life and in her marriage. This story had the perfect amount of angst for me, and the story itself sucked me in from the very first page to the very last. I will absolutely read this lovely little story again. I love this author's angst, and I'm happy she has so many other stories out that I can catch up on next!
I feel like this book would be a hit or miss for people. Revenge romance, damsel vibes, heroine thats been kicked down and belittled all her life. Hero is vindictice and blunt. A lot of miscommunications and secrets. I like reading books that hurt my feelings, and this book did it for me.
Angst = h was so ignored and unloved by her own family and this extended to almost everyone taking their cues from her family and treating her like she's nothing.
Grovel = H marries h as revenge against the OW (h's sister) for cheating on him. Once H really gets to know the h, he falls hard and fast and soon becomes OTT protective. H must work to get h to want to stay with him. H adjusts his life to fit in with h's life and does so with relief. H finds h to be his happiness and that his life with her is beyond peaceful and content. h overhears the H talk to h's family about why he married the h and it is heart wrenching. H must then work and wait for the h to decide the H is worth letting back into her life. H's family must also grovel/work to prove to the h they are not actually snobby judgmental asshats they at first seem to be. Each family member has individual conversations with the h where they express their wrongdoings against the h and then also apologize but do not ask nor demand forgiveness as that is solely up to the h (I really liked that too).
OW drama = the OW is constantly touching the H (hugs, soft touches, holding arm, kisses on cheeks even though her aim was his mouth, etc.) and he is constantly letting her as he at first still believes himself in love with OW despite her cheating on him for months. H does not let it get very far and is very clear that he will not cheat either physically or emotionally on the h as he strongly believes that being married to the h does mean fidelity even though he got married as a F U to the OW. OW is verbally and physically abusive to the h. OW pushes the h down causing h to hit her head and needing stiches; OW slapped the h as well a different time. OW's & h's mom also physically and emotionally abused the h. h's dad was distant and disinterested so did not interfere. The reader can infer that the abuse has been lifelong. Comeuppance? OW and mom are ostracized socially which is a huge hit to their ego as well as their business which caused them to have to shut down a few locations of their spa business. Dad is politely but sternly told to retire from his job where he worked for H's family. So all in all, h's family lost social status and took a huge financial hit that they may not recover from (tots justified).
I received an ARC of this book. It was fantastic. The angst, the OW drama and the grovel were chef's kiss. There was NO cheating (IMO - some may view the H's emotional attachment to OW as emotional infidelity, but I did not) in the book.
Audioneed = re-read/listened to book and thought the dual narration was done well (duet would have been better (-: )
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Damien sucks! The whole Archer family sucks! Emilia's family sucks and Emilia SUCKS for caving in so easily. Literally every single person in this book sucks ass. Moana and friends included. If my bestfriend told me her husband USED her to get back at his ex and then let everyone assault and bully her? I would have scratched his eyes out. Especially if I had a spineless friend like Emilia, one of us has to be crazy cos there ain't no way I'm letting a man do us like this 😭
Both families were disgusting, Duncan included. What I can't seem to fathom is how everyone just BELIEVED the lies Bianca and her mother spun, did no one for a milli-of-a-second stop to think "Hmm...geeze, this story about a girl I don't know seems heavily embellished?" Like what actual sane person just believes a one sided narrative like that? Wild. Even Emilia's dad gaslit himself into thinking his daughter was a lazy gold digger SMH
I think this series would have been rated higher if Emilia was given more space to heal and Damien grovelled more. I'm also disappointed that the author didn't explore Emilia coming into her own person. I would have loved to see her art work getting picked up or becoming more established as a great fck you to all her haters kinda thing. I think it would have been vsry healing for Emilia and us as readers. This man committed the most heinous act of betrayal and all he had to pay for his penance was a few weeks of silent treatment and being the big spoon. I don't know...maybe I'm spiteful evil bitch cos I could neverrrrr 😂 I would've cut his clothes up and scattered them on our front lawn. Or at least throat punched him.
While I really want to rate this book a one star, I can't deny this book started great so I'll settle for two stars. Sadly I don't think this author matches my vibe so I will not be reading any other works.
Jesus, Damien is a cowardly P.O.S. and I struggled to finish. I'm really disappointed this book is being recommended in betrayal & grovel groups, especially by the author herself. Stop promoting your books as such if you can't deliver!!! Also, hoping for a MFC that actually gives as good as she gets is just a pipe dream at this point. Half a page of standing up for yourself after being crapped on so spectacularly by everyone is just pathetic. I think I'll pass on any more of her books.
After reading reviews of her other works, I will avoid this author. She seems to have a weird obsession with writing subpar MMCs who treat MFCs like complete shit and do nothing about it. What a joke.
Ummm this was awful? I don't think I've ever given a book one star before (usually I would memory-hole it or DNF), but here we are. I became aware of this author when Cate C Wells posted about one of her releases, and this was free on Prime, so I thought I'd give her a try and....Ugh. I thought maybe (given the length and recurring themes) that these were churned-out category romances, but it seems the author is just formulaic. I did a little scrolling through her other books, and they all seem to be the same: low self-esteem woman lands alpha, is in love, overhears betrayal, forgives him. Given the quality, you could tell me this was completely Ai generated and I would believe you, but it could also be copy/paste from her files of tropes and scenes. At any rate the author is crazy prolific one way or another.
Emilia fits the Alden core story well "I was aware that it was pathetic, but I hoped that if I did something for them, maybe they'd like me." She brings this energy to all aspects of her life in this book. She's always been in love with her (cartoonishly horrible) sister's fiancé, he decides to revenge [marital congress] her when he finds out the sister cheated on him, but they end up Vegas married.
Damian is THE WORST, doesn't tell his family that the sister cheated, so they hate Emilia as a gold digger. Doesn't really support her when her (cartoonishly horrible) family repeatedly physically attacks her, or his (cartoonishly horrible) assistant sabotages her. Lets his (cartoonishly horrible and only very slightly less so than the others) family shun and be awful to his wife because he doesn't want to admit he was cheated on. "I should tell them, I thought then, about Bianca cheating on me, about how Emilia was not the seducer but the seduced. But I didn't. Cowardly? Probably." YOU THINK? He lets her think she's at fault for the marriage, but refuses to annul it when she asks. He insists she moves into his apartment, then he moves out, he still loves the sister and picks her over Emilia when they are all together AND lets his family keep inviting her to family events, but hey, he really liked [forking] Emilia, the "best sex his ever had" although by the descriptions he sounds really bad at it.
Anyhoo, I took this book off the depths of my kindle because it is marketed as having a great grovel and I was in the mood to read one, but there just isn't one. The entire family and Damian ruin her life, as a result of this marriage she has lost her job, her family, been bullied, has weeks living with this guys at her place (he can't ever list things he likes about her without including the sex, ever, even in his "apology") and then overhears his betrayal and goes into a depressive tailspin. So (realistically, of course) this family of business moguls takes off a full month to watch her and make sure she's hydrated while she's depresh-painting, and she lets them. Not even the housekeeper, who she actually likes and trusts, but the high-powered business people who until now have hated her hang out at the apartment of the person they destroyed. "Marcela had even said that what she had done was unforgivable and hoped that I'd move past it." Bygones! apparently. As for him, no grovel. He just hangs around and she takes him back. Not even the weakest apology. Bygones! again. He's irredeemable, and I've never had an author work less to bring a reader along in an MMC's redemption.
Oh, AND he's supposed to be a high powered art dealer, and his office is described as having paintings and art from so many different eras and mediums I couldn't imagine a professional would mix. From Ming vases to Monet to Warhols to antique Piaget watches, all in his office. The insurance headache alone! AND a character refers to their home city of San Francisco as Frisco. It's like the author gptchatted "expensive art" and "city nicknames residents do not use" and just went with it.
Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it. Though I did like the heroine, her family sucks. He and his family aren’t much better than hers, makes for a long book of keeping the abused heroine in the dark.
The artist heroine reminds me of another book. To be honest, I checked the publishing date thinking maybe I’d skim read it before. It’s going to bug me, but not enough to go digging.
I was really excited to get an email announcing a free download for this book. I am currently waiting for the July 3rd release of It Must Be Love So this book was a nice surprise. I have read several of MA’s books, but haven’t always written a review. There are some books of hers I haven’t read yet because the premise is not what I want at the moment, but the premise of this book hooked me right away. I’m rating this 4 stars. I was not quite sold on how a family could be so cruel to their own flesh and blood, or that people supposedly close to the family didn’t see what was going on. On the other hand one just has to read the news and we do hear stories where people do get away with things much worse and no one near them realizes it until they are arrested etc..
This story delivered a hefty dose of angst, which is my drug of choice. The ick factor for some people may be that the hero was with one sister first for 3 years before hooking up with the heroine.(He and the sister were on a break) Our poor heroine is up against many people thwarting her throughout the story, at least most of them get some sort of payback or undergo changes in the end. I will do an overview of the characters then go into spoilers, but I will give you fair warning of spoilers so you can skip spoilers if you want to go into the story fresh!
Emilia- Our heroine is 23 years old and has always been considered the “lesser” sister. She isn’t fashionable enough, sexy enough, ambitious enough, exciting etc….She was an unplanned baby and is about 5 years younger than her beautiful vivacious sister Bianca. I am not sure why the mom hates her so much. Maybe she resented getting pregnant again. The mom’s hatred of her daughter would of course bleed over into the older daughter Bianca, who also treated Emilia terribly. Then there is the father who was pretty much hands off and let his wife handle the family matters. They would even send Emilia to live with a loving aunt in the summers, but sadly that aunt died when Em was 10. This aunt was the one to inspire Em to be an artist. Em, always looking for love would of course be her family’s personal doormat. The h has been in love with the Hero since she was 5 and he was 15. Her dad worked for his family and both of the moms were good friends.
Damian- Our hero is 32 years old and successfully runs the families art galleries. He has been in a relationship with Bianca, the h’s sister for the last 3 years. There is mad passion between them(which he mistakes for true love), but with passion comes many break ups and make ups. The last break up was the final straw for the hero when he learned that Bianca was carrying on secretly with someone else. This sets up the story.
Bianca(of course she is named Bianca 😂)- She is the sister from hell. Like I said the mom set the 2 sisters apart early on with her own vitriol for the heroine. Bianca is vivacious and knows how to work the masses. She has many loyal (for now) friends that back her up when she makes up lies about the heroine.
Duncan- brother to the hero. He is very team Bianca…until he actually sits down and meets the heroine and realizes that she is not the villain that her family has painted her to be.
Marcella Archer- Damian’s mom and family protector. She is friends with the h’s mom and Bianca. She too believes the lies about the younger daughter. She is on getting her son back with Bianca as she has been blinded by the lies of the family. Let’s just say you don’t want to cross Marcella, so this doesn’t bode well for our liars in the story.
Supportive characters if the h(because otherwise this would be a really depressing story)Moana the next door neighbor and best friend. Liza, the H’s housekeeper. And the family doctor that we know as simply Doc. He is a very minor character, but has more insight than people supposedly close to the h.
No cheating in the story.
STOP 🛑 NOW SPOILERS ARE COMING UP NEXT STOP 🛑 🛑 SPOILER ALERT
The story opens with the h and H at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas. They are married and he has only been broken up with the h’s sister for a short time(month or two, maybe less?) The sex between the h and H was magical despite her virginity status. She is feeling guilty as she thinks that she has taken advantage of a drunken H and due to her unrequited love for him trapped him in a marriage. He never tells her differently. He is cold after their honeymoon night.(he was so surprised at the mind bending sex and other feelings that he pulls back) I mean he is in love with Bianca right?
So what’s the real story??? He discovered that beautiful Bianca was two timing him(they were broke up, but barely plus we find out later that her cheating was at other times too) So he find out that the despised sister, our h, was going to be in Vegas . He knew she had a crush on him and decided he would sleep with her to get back at Bianca. Instead he proposed to her. He lets the h think and everyone else around them that she was the instigator of the marriage. He doesn’t let Bianca know that he knows she cheated on him.
The hero does some despicable/cowardly things to our innocent sweet heroine that never has anyone in her corner all to prevent himself from giving in to his feelings for the h. Here are some of his sins:
*He refuses to give her an annulment or divorce as he says it would be poor publicity, yet there is an expiration date on their marriage and he allows his family to treat her like a gold digger. *The h gets attacked by both her mother and sister in front of him and it takes him a minute to take up for the h, Now after seeing the treatment of the h this should have been a wake up call as to how hideous her family was. *He gives her the wedding rings obviously meant for the sister as they are ott and our h has simple tastes *He continues to go to Sunday lunches with the family knowing that the h’s family is all invited, except for her , his wife(his mom doesn’t want to upset Bianca) *He abandons the h at his residence at the 4 seasons, the same place he would have had her sister over multiple times(he was staying at his brother’s but the h didn’t know where he was)
The mom offers the h a dream job, only to ignore her and have the h’s coworkers treat her like a leper. The H’s personal assistant goes out of her way to make the h feel inferior and doesn’t pass on any messages from the h to the H. She is consistently vilified in the press for being a slut and a home wrecker, and no one counters the claims.
One of the best things the h does, is to find her backbone and reinsert it. *When the H’s brother comes to deliver a postnuptial document, she gladly tells him she doesn't want any money and hands him the wedding rings that she will never wear. *When it’s obvious that the H is keeping his distance from her, she moves back to her grotty flat because that is home to her forcing the H to come live with her(when he realizes he is developing feelings for her) *After her poor treatment at the job his mom got her, she quits without giving 2 weeks notice, and picks up a different job she was offered due to her talent. *The best is when she finds out the truth behind the H’s marriage to her and delivers several blows to the family members around her basically cutting off her family and telling the H the following:
“Emilia took a deep breath. "Sign the divorce papers, Damian and get the hell out of my life."She walked to the door and turned around."You all kept saying how I'm not suited to be an Archer but if this what it means to be an Archer, to lie and cheat and manipulate? You're right, I'm not suited to be one of you. Damien, you should marry Bianca. She and you…match fucking made in Archer heaven.”
The good news is that several people get their comeuppance. Her family is completely cut off in more ways than one. His family steps up and are on team Emilia, doing their best to take care of her the right way. The hero undergoes some changes as well. The h, with her love and simple living, gives the H a much better life with authentic people and rewarding life experiences.
The author gives us an additional epilogue on her website. In addition to the one at the end of the story.
This what happens when you feel like reading at 2 in the morning… you read this book-

I read the synopsis and i was interested and knew my heart was going to hurt and for some odd reason I like that pain bc I know this book would be good.
「 ✦ 𝐄𝐌𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐀 𝐖𝐈𝐍𝐓𝐄𝐑𝐒 ✦ 」 ╰┈➤ (𝘧𝘤: 𝘔𝘦𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘢 𝘠𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘤)
This girl is so strong! Literally all she does is breathe and everyone is hating on her! What did she do to you guys for her to deserve to be treated that way! If I was her I would’ve…myself bc I wouldn’t know how to handle all the hate and feeling unwanted. She should’ve went to Chicago and started a new life or be with someone else! She doesn’t deserve that pain!
I don’t like him like he’s such a wimp! He really had a plan to hurt Emilia and then tells her he doesn’t know why he chose her to be his wife to make his ex girlfriend jealous… SO YOU KNEW WHY ARE YOU LYING?!?! He just kept hurting Emilia and has the audacity to be surprised that people are hating on her- Then instead of want to keep peace with his family he doesn’t tell the truth and lets his family hate on his wife!
‧₊˚ ☁️⋅♡𓂃 ࣪ ִֶָ☾.
I just so bad for Emilia she doesn’t deserve any of this! All she wanted was to be an artist and earn a living to pay her bills but no!
Emilia and Damian’s family deserve to go to hell for the way she treated Emilia. They didn’t give her chance and just believed the lies they were being fed!
Bianca…girl get a life and tell your mother that too-
Emilia could’ve been better off with Duncan or Dean anything but Damian! I was actually rooting for Emilia and the two other brothers specifically Dean since they have more in common!
I would never forgive Damian literally sign the divorce papers and travel to Chicago and start a new life!
He doesn’t deserve Emilia…
Also why was he always thinking about doing it with her? It doesn’t look like he was there for love or more 65% doing it and 35% love…

Overall 2.5/5 stars ★
I didn’t like the book and I want my time back from reading this… okay so it was a fair read but it just hurt me that Emilia was treated that way.
I don’t like Damian and what he put her through.
I don’t know why anyone would give this book a 4/5 stars…
I was expecting much more groveling but the girl went back running to him. I hated their dynamic and their relationship from the very beginning but I kept reading because I thought we were going to see some growth from both of the characters but it felt very flat.
The FMC was treated like trash by EVERYONE...let me repeat by EVERYONE (except 1 person who was her friend/neighbor). The MMC made me wanna punch a wall. He acted like a child and then simply could not accept the consequences of his actions. I wish I could erase this couple from my mind because I do not want to believe they lived HEA.
Let me preface these complaints by saying Alden is my favorite romance author currently. Her books are getting better and better. This book is VERY MUCH worth a read as this author’s storytelling is so talented.
I enjoy this author’s books! This one could’ve had more grovel.
I was gonna finish this just so I could write down my thoughts but the beginning angered me so much, I had to DNF.
Damian is actually incredibly cruel and skeevy. Ain’t no way you convinced the little sister of your partner that you are genuine in wanting to marry her while you still have feelings for the OG partner.
Emilia, or whatever her name is, is our beige, no personality, self-sacrificing, virgin martyr who is so boring that I am utterly speechless.
Within the first 10 pages, we get a graphic sex scene between characters that we literally don’t know or have any attachment to, and there is little to no set up for the scene. It’s just ✨bam✨ fingers in the cooch and 3 orgasms for our lovely Doormat’s first sexual experience.
3.5- this was toxic and messy but I ate it up. Read it in like 2 hours (all of these author’s books are quite short and fun). Parts of it were a bit weird but overall still fun
If you liked the wrong bride by Catherina Maura, you’ll like this. Lots of OW drama
Loneliness gnawed at me, a constant reminder of my invisibility. I had always prided myself on finding joy and contentment in my art, but now, I felt utterly hollow. The sting of being unwanted, of being ignored by the one person who should have seen me, was almost unbearable.
I know MA's hs are treated bad - so that we get our angst fix. *eyeroll* But this one here is the worst form of Cinderella.
The H's family and hers are friends since forever but no one(!) - the H, his parents or his brothers 'know' her. For them ,the sister is all things good and beautiful while she's an invisible non-entity. Barely seen, never heard. Even worse - a worthless and useless parasite. No one in his family ever wonders - why she's never around or why her family denigrate her so. And NOW...within minutes of meeting her they see the real her? At least the H and his brother do...the mother does too but she's still Team sister. Because well, you need spine to be an Archer.
So, yes the H/Sister are off-on bf/gf. Everyones knows, expects them to marry someday. But then the H gets to know that the skank has been cheating on him. His response, to after the invisible sister and have sex with her. Because he knows how much his gf hates her sister. Therefore = best revenge. He follows her to Vegas - but ends up married to her. No secret - the h has always loved him.
Now, the h here is feeling guilty - thinking she somehow manifested it and that the H was too drunk that night to know better. The a-h lets her think that. Her family expectedly goes ballistic - mother/sister duo hit her and she ends up in hospital. He brings her back to his home, nurses her but then deserts her - guilty about his actions and that he has had the best sex ever. She knows that her family and sister are still welcome at his family home while she's shunned and hidden away. She has sacrificed so much for her family, to get their approval - talking shitty jobs at their salons, giving up jobs at Sotheby's - but nothing was ever good enough. So, she leaves his penthouse knowing it'd take him days to even realize she's gone. And she's not wrong.
The H takes her back to his home - guilty but still intending to use her. Her quiet hurt demeanor, isolation, shunning by everyone, emotional and physical abuse by her family, not expecting any better all add up to = Heaps load of angst!
I liked how he deals with her tormentors at work (she starts working at his gallery), but his mom gets off scot-free imo. She needed to be brought doen a peg or two. And so it goes on. Till the big grovel/healing. Her family's humiliation/just deserts should have been on-page and clear.
ART Well, I liked how her art and her artistic temperament are weaved into the story. The days she goes into a painting frenzy at the cost of her health, all fueled by her heartbreak is wonderfully done. Little ott but I liked the angst hit.
And I WANT, DEMAND Moana's book - don't care if she is an escort etc. Whatever. Too good a character to waste. Maybe Dean ?
I read this book because it was advertised that the H, Damien, and his whole family have to grovel for the h's forgiveness. Since the h, Emelia, found out about the betrayal at about 70%, I was looking forward to a nice long grovel. Unfortunately, that was just not the case. There was NO grovel in this book and it actually ended at about 84%.
Damien seemed sorry that Emelia was hurting but he didn’t appear to feel any true guilt or remorse for lying to her or using her the way he did. He said, “She was hurt but she’d get over it.” He didn’t do anything to earn Emelia's forgiveness or gain her trust back again. She “painted away her pain” while allowing Damien to sneak into her bed and “spoon her” at night.
While Damien's family members did offer brief apologies to Emelia, Damien never really said the words at all. He said, “I know you’re upset” and “I can’t regret how we got together” then he and his family virtually bulldozed their way back into Emelia’s life.
Such a disappointment.

I really liked this book. Yes Damian was a douche canoe at the beginning but you could see he really loved Emilia. Her family was awful. Her sister, Damian's ex, was as vile as they come. She spread horrible rumours and lies to discredit Emilia when she was the cheating evil party. I cried because Emilia, went through hell. Her family never loved her. She was a talented artist and gave up a good job because her Mother and Sister needed her. His family was no better. Duncan his brother realized that Emilia was a good person first and hid parents didn't until the end. She totally checked out at one point due to the extreme pain she was feeling. It was so sad. Once they had sex there was no body else for the hero. She was a Virgin. Normally I hate sexing sisters but it didn't bother me as much in this book. The heroine was an incredible person and the sister was so evil, I had only a small problem with it.when she finds out why he married her, it was an very but he totally would not let her go. I loved it. Best book I have read by this author. And no cheating. Thank goodness!
I liked that it was a quick story. I didn’t want to be up all night reading since I started it late in the afternoon.
But I wasn’t a fan of The Wrong Husband. It was very similar to The Wrong Wife which I read recently. A doormat heroine. Horrible families. Evil ex. The heroine being the jobless, poor one while the hero is the rich, ruthless billionaire.
Damian was an a-hole throughout the majority of the story. The way he just manipulates Emilia to get his way drove me crazy. The way he treated Emilia just grated on my nerves.
I did like Emilia. I liked that she stuck to who she was and didn’t want to change for anyone. She had a bit of spine for sticking up for herself because no one else was going too. But she also spent most of the book crying to the point of a breakdown because of Damian. Is that really the kind of love you want to read about? I sure didn’t. I know couples can fight or make mistakes and can make you cry but Emilia just seemed miserable with Damian. She spiralled without him to the point of near hospitalisation and I didn’t think that was healthy. I also didn’t find their chemistry all that special or saucy.
Now my biggest issue with this book was when Emilia finds out the real reason why Damian married her. For revenge on her sister for cheating on him. What bothered me so much about Emilia’s reaction to this revelation was that her issues from it were over the pettiest things. Of course Damian didn’t marry her for love so why did it suddenly taint their entire marriage? Why was her problem that she didn’t believe he found her attractive or couldn’t have felt anything real? She started their marriage off on the wrong foot too. If I was in Emilia’s shoes my main concern was how he let me get vilified by everyone in his life. I would have left Damian because his lies had her so mistreated by her parents, harassed at their workplace, rejected by her in-laws, physically assaulted multiple times by her sister & mother, publicly shamed in the press, accosted by strangers & bullied by her husband’s staff. Damian let all that go on when he could have confessed the truth and made it stop. But instead he chose to let Emilia believe she was the instigator of their drunken wedding. He manipulated her to stay married. He let her believe their sex was shit. All to protect his ex’s indiscretions because he was a coward & embarrassed over a man like him being cheated on than to fess up the truth and protect his wife from abuse she was getting from all sides. But Emilia doesn’t hold that against Damian at all in the end. I couldn’t believe it. To me that isn’t a husband I would want to have. Worst is… Damian isn’t even punished or forced to face the consequences of his actions. Because Emilia lets him back into her bed for cuddles through the night. She lets his family take over her house while she paints. She forgives Damian after 1 week during 1 conversation. Not enough grovelling and apologising for me.
