Princess Ai, Vol. 2 (My Kindle Review)

AI’s beautiful singing voice has made her into an up and coming singer and her agency are tirelessly prepping her up for or her big debut. She on the other hand is getting very exasperated by all the work she’s doing for them while all she wants is to discover more of her past and even reunite with Kent. Ai also learns that her songs are being loved by so many for how she puts her heart into them, and they even create a new ally for her. Unbeknownst to her, her manager is planning something mysterious. There’s also a bonus story seeing Ai, Kent and his roommate all on a resort trip. A- (91%/Excellent)

Might be a smidge but biased because I love Courtney Love. Even after she became a train wreck. Will always love her.
This series is slow to start off and gets better as the pages fly by.

Princess Ai is a total punk rock diva. Her career is taking off and everyone is in love. Except for the princess, she is miserable and feels like a slave in her recording contract.
She sings her heart out and is still trying to recapture her memory. Also missing her library love Kent.
Will Princess Ai get her memory back and get her love?
We can only hope. Sigh!

Repeat review, since it applies to all 3 volumes:

This was complete garbage, obvious wish fulfillment by Courtney Love about an edgy, amazing, hot, talented otherworldly princess with a ridiculous plot and not one believable or relatable thing happening.

What can I say? I loved this Manga. Maybe I'm a little biased as I do love me so Courtney Love as well, but in all honesty. At the time I read it (years ago when it first came out) I did find the story to be original, thought provoking and just a plain fun read. I fell in love with the charaters and the world that Courtney and her Illustrator created.

I love the artwork and I love Tess, but Tess is the only character I somewhat care about and am interested in so that's really sad because she isn't even a main character. The story starts slowly picking up but I still don't like either Kent either Ai and that's really sad because this story had a lot of potential but it's just so bland.

After a decent first entry the cracks in the Princess Ai series are beginning to show. Whilst the Kujiradou's gorgeous art could initially forgive a lot of issues with the writing it can be longer gloss over the main problem, Princess Ai herself. Ai's character can best be described as two personalities pushed together: a bratty diva and a love filled inspiration. Sadly they never properly combine and she ends up flitting iratically between the two, sometimes in the same scene. Following her recruitment by the HTA she is no longer homeless and working at a strip club allowing the diva personality to come to the fore, determined to destroy every shred of goodwill built up in volume 1.

Despite joining the talent agency to work as a singer Ai seems shocked that she has to, if you can believe it, sing and carry out her contract. Whilst Takeshi and other HTA members can be patronising and controlling, Ai's unpleasant nature can no longer be overlooked. Her crowning moment comes when she finds a woman who is about to jump from a building and rather than being concerned is annoyed that she can't find somewhere to be alone.

Jen from Club Cupid is brought in to be a friend for Ai, though isn't given any to do except gush over how great Ai is, in stark contrast to everything Ai actually does. Given that Jen came to Japan by herself and has had to work at a strip club, Ai's complaints about HTA are even more jarring, as unlike Jen she is in a place of financial security and has every resource available to her to make her music a reality. Ai may be a princess, but her complete lack of awareness of her own privilege is insulting both to the characters and the reader.

In a similar vain to Hikaru, volume 2 gives us a new gay character in Yoshi, Ai's assistant. It may be crass to refer to someone as the 'gay character', but like Hikaru before him, Yoshi is given no details about his life other than his sexuality (though here implied) and his opinions on Ai.

The fury Tess manages to secure the dubious title of most engaging character. Her actions are driven by the suffering of her people and help to add weight to a story which is becoming increasingly superficial and repetitive. There are only so many times Ai can complain that she doesn't like HTA making her a rich world famous star, but Tess manages to remind us that there is the potential for an interesting story.

The major plot thread of the series, Ai's mysterious past, is for the most part revealed but for some reason this is given as a huge flashback dump with vast amount of information that hadn't even been hinted at. Some points even seem to contradict themselves, which seems on par with the writing quality as a whole.

As with the previous volume the saving grace is Kujiradou's art, if you can get past Ai's bizarre torso on the front cover. With more flashbacks her subject matter has been allowed to expand, and the many of the dougen are striking and beautiful, particularly the angels and furies. Sadly, she can only do so much, and Ai's personality is ultimately about to derail the series.

A szerelmi szál most viszonylag takarékon volt, ennek örültem.

All’interno del volume 1: Destitution, è contenuto il testo della canzone “Hold on to me” di Courtney Love.

If you've read the first volume in this series and felt like you were left with more questions than answers, don't worry: volume two answers some of those questions! We get a lot more exposition and chunks of world-building in this one! Again, there are some tropes at play that lean toward the cheesy side of things, but it kind of makes the story a little more endearing. There's a lot of heart behind this story, and it shows. (Again, my only quibble seems to be with the jabs here and there at Hikaru-the-gay-roommate, and an additional jab at a character who seems like they're androsexual, to say the least.)

I'm not sure I have much to offer in the way of critical reviewing for this series; doing critical reviews of manga is tricky, to say the least, and I like this series besides.

The obvious Courtney's self-insert as AI is becoming even more obvious. And i still can't stand her plus there's even some ugly comments directed to the lgbtq+ characters and just brushed off like it's nothing.

This book isn’t any better from the first one. The homophobia in this book still repulses me and the gay characters are so stereotypical. The only reason i gave this more than 1 star is because i like the illustrations even tho they are questionable from time to time.

Fun and different story. This volume is much more tame than the first. I suppose because the princess has lost most of her control.

More of a 3.5, but I had to round up. It's enjoyable, even if it moves pretty fast and treats its gay characters incredibly stereotypically. I guess at least it has some in and isn't too awful to them? It's kinda fun, and I like the costumes.

Princess Ai's quest for knowledge of her past continues, even though her employers at HTA keep her on a tight schedule and don't let her leave the fancy condo they've put her up in. Thankfully Ai has Kent on her side and he manages to get a book of legends about Ai-land to her (go go super librarian!) as well as to talk with her during a radio broadcast to promote her music. These star-crossed lovers can't be kept apart for long though, and they are finally re-united during Ai's dramatic first concert when the Fury who has been chasing her catches up with her.

Even though the storyline is totally engaging - who can resist a story of a rebellious banished princess - what I like best about this series is the beautiful artwork. The costume design is especially gorgeous because it straddles the boundary between punk and angelic glam. Absolutely fabulous, if not actually wearable!

Soon to be punk/rock and roll star, Princess Ai has just made her debut and she's more popular than ever anticipated! But at the same time she still has her own problems such as saving her home planet from a revolution and sorting her feelings between future and past lovers. All this while still being a mega popstar... no biggie.

This series keeps getting better and better, I can't wait for the next volume!
Although the main villain has already been replaced so quickly so that does sadden me a little.

Surprisingly, I still like this. In fact, I found it rather easy to ignore Courtney Love's involvement. (Possibly because Love is a beast.)

The first volume was really scrambled--too much was happening, too fast. A lot of the characters are stock (e.g. gay roommate Hikaru), but I guess that's what you have to expect in a three-volume series. The second volume explains a little more--like who Nora is.

The art is still pretty. I like the clothing.

Middle of the series where Princess Ai makes important steps to find out the truth about who she is, and what she truly believes in. Her friends Jen, Kent, Hikaru, Fa'an and so many others help guide her on her way. Musical fun!

Kind of just an average manga for me. The story is okay but a little confusing due to Ai's lack of memory but it is a fun read... like most manga i've read. The characters are also okay but I haven't fallen in love with any of them.
