CAN A BOOKWORM AND A BADASS FIND LOVE?
Mage teacher Peri Lee came from a neighborhood so rough that she worried each day about whether her mom would make it home from work safely. All that is behind her now, and she wants a quiet, predictable life. So when big, tough Deputy Shire Reeve Roland Wade asks her out, she turns him down. With his linebacker’s build, broken nose, and badass manner, he reminds her too much of the thugs who lurked in the area where she grew up.
Books aren’t Roland’s thing, but petite, smart Peri has a spark that draws him. Just when he thinks his cause is hopeless, until battling an attack by ghouls, the mages’ deadly enemies, on the bus carrying Peri and her class shows her a different side of him.
Still, his job puts him in danger and causes her the same worry she knew as a child. She isn’t sure she can take it, and he isn’t sure he should put her through it. Will the strain be too much for their relationship, or will magic and mistletoe help them find their way to each other?
Nancy Northcott’s childhood ambition was to grow up and become Wonder Woman. Around fourth grade, she realized it was too late to acquire Amazon genes, but she still loved comic books, science fiction, fantasy and YA romance. A sucker for fast action and wrenching emotion, Nancy combines the romance and high stakes she loves in the books she writes.
Her debut novel, Renegade, received a starred review from Library Journal. The reviewer called it “genre fiction at its best.” Nancy is a three-time RWA Golden Heart finalist and has won the Maggie, the Molly, the Emerald City Opener, and Put Your Heart in a Book.
Married since 1987, Nancy and her husband have one son, a bossy dog, and a house full of books.
This Christmas novella is set in Nancy Northcott’s Light Mage Wars series. Roland, a deputy shire reeve (like a U.S. Marshall) is attracted to mage teacher Peri. Both have issues when it comes to the other. Peri is afraid she can’t handle the uncertainty and danger of Roland’s job. Roland is worried he is not book smart enough for Peri. Although Peri’s issue is difficult to overcome, there is a sweet HFN at the end. There is a bit of world building but since this is a short novella that comes later in the series, world building shouldn’t be expected. The earlier books in the series are definitely on my TBR.
A sweet little read. My heart broke for Roland on page 1 and I was all set to hate Peri for making him doubt himself. But then, my heart broke all over again for Peri and I kept reading to see if they could be what the other so badly needed.
There is a lot about the world of the mages that I didn’t know but I was able to follow the main storyline fine enough.
A quick yet intense story of new love. The characters are engaging and very relatable. The librarian and the hunky (mage version) cop. Can she handle the constant worry of his high-risk job? Can he ask it of her?
This is the first book I've read in this series. Although I read it out of order I enjoyed the story immensely.
This was adorable. I was a little lost becuase this was the first in the series that i read so i was missing a lot of world background. but i had enough to know the cutest couple when i read about them! I love that the things Roland loves about Peri are the things that she can't believe he likes. He see her for who she truly is. I also like that Peri overcomes her initial judgements and comes to know Roland for who he truly is. I will being going back to the beginning, because if the rest of the series is like this book, it will be worth the read.
I really enjoyed this story. Peri is a mage teacher and Roland is a deputy shire reeve. His job is very dangerous and this brings bad memories for Pari. Roland is insecure about how smart and well-read Peri is. Roland reminds her a lot of the way she grew up with bad guys in the neighborhood – never knowing if her mom was going to make it out safely. This is a nice story of the two of them overcoming insecurities and taking chances.
Roland and Peri's story was very emotional. Nancy Northcott did a fantastic job with the characters, and the difficulties they were facing in their relationship. With trouble brewing with the ghouls, they will most likely be facing more drama in the future. It was interesting to see how much they were dealing with right from the beginning of their relationship. They are so different, that it was easy to think they just might walk away from each other. Seeing them give it a shot made for a great story.
