He's waited centuries for a rematch. Shes's about to give him one.

After failing the test to join the Lotus League, Wen Pierce will do anything to prove herself worthy. Even if it means being demoted to a maid in the house of one of the Eight Immortals--Li Tieguai. But this seductive yet surly immortal wants only one thing--her surrender to his rigid control.

Tricked by the Monkey King, Li Tieguai lives in shame and surrounds himself with other outcasts, like the spirit animal Cat. But when the vibrant and sultry Wen is assigned to his household, he'll learn just how good a thief she really is.

Rematch features a hot new breed of shifters, set in a post-apocalyptic world where Chosen warriors must battle demonic forces--and the desires of their hearts--to restore the balance of yin and yang before humanity is destroyed forever.

If you love dirty-talking alpha heroes, tough heroines who challenge them, exotic cultures, and unique twists on mythology, don't miss out on this scorching hot series.

I just finised reading Rachael Slate second book on Chinese Zodiac signs, and I love every minute of my reading

In this second book you will encounter Sheng’s elder in Li Tieguai who has been living on Fangzhand Island for a few decades.

You will also renew with the Matchmaker who will play a role in Li’s life by bringing him a girl who is not really obedient and a bit of trouble maker by the name of Wen. Wen failed her test to become a member of the Lotus League and has been sent to Li’s Island and his house. Will Li be able to deal with Wen in more ways he can imagine and wonder how or if he will succed to make her obey is house rules?

You will learn how Li has been a reclusive on this Island and understand that he has a low esteem of himsef, and how Wen will make him rebuild it. You will find what the Monkey King did to Li way back when, and how the role will be reversed on the Monkey King.

Will the Matmaker be right in bringing Wen into Li’s life? And will Li open his heart and soul to Wen?

You’ll have to read the book and find out by yourself. Enjoy it as much as I did.

Rachael will be continuing her Chinese Zodiac Romance serie and one will be available this summer.

REMATCH (A Chinese Zodiac Romance, # 1.5)

-- MY THOUGHTS --
Judging a Book by it's Cover: It's unique. Not initially eye-catching. Synopsis does not automatically grab me either as I tend not to prefer to read Paranormal and I try to avoid the Fantasy genre altogether.
As a favor to a friend, I have opted to read and review this novella even though I am not a fan of Paranormal or Fantasy Romance and this is a bit of both. I've not read TRANCING THE TIGER (Chinese Zodiac, # 1), but have been assured that this can stand alone and does not need to be read in order. The following review will be based solely and honestly on the author's writing and NOT my personal personal preferences.
Looking Deeper:
First thought was that this is more the more mature and more complex version of Beauty and the Beast meets The Island of Misfit Toys. Ms Slate has created a fantastical world of spirit hosts, immortals and gods based on the Chinese Zodiac and myth. Although this is not my typical genre, I found it rather interesting and intriguing. Billed as a shapeshifter paranormal, that a bit insulting. It's not a were-shifter story, but rather one of a spirit, energy or essence and it's one compatible host.
Li's an immortal that suffered a bad decision and is now cursed. Wen is mortal, she lost her brother to the Red Death plague and sought justice by joining the Lotus League. Only she failed the test and was placed in Li's home in servitude as punishment.
The story line took a little while for me to really comprehend, as the myth, lore and fantasy part is always more difficult for me to absorb, but once I melded with the story line, there was no stopping. The characters are really fun to get to know. The dialogue is in turns smart, sassy, emotional and enlightening. There's an underlying element of hope and second-chances that keeps you engaged as a reader. The chemistry is immediate, but refreshingly, they do not satisfy that magnetism until much later. For being an average-length novella, it managed to convey a depth and fullness to the plot to make it feel like a bigger story than it was. The conflicts that arose throughout varied in degree of complexity, but all were resolved in timely and mature manners. There was virtually no predictability and the conclusion was solid enough to imply a long and happy HEA for Wen and Li.
Overall, it was a refreshingly new take on shifters and a fantastic new world to explore.

This is the second book in the Chinese Zodiac Romance series and it is wonderful. Wen is such a feisty determined character that you can’t help love her. As for Li, well he is just divine. Tormented by a choice made long ago, he believes he’s not worthy of anything. Upon having Wen thrust upon him, he soon learns nothing as it seams inclyuding everything he’s ever believed. A beautiful wonderful story about two misfits and the choices and mistakes they’ve made.

Opening Scene:

Fangzhang Island

624 days since the first outbreak of the Red Death
Those sparkling green eyes would be his undoing.

The Review:

After failing the test to join the Lotus League, Wen Pierce will do anything to prove herself worthy, including working as a maid for Li Tieguai. Yet the surely and seductive immortal wants her to surrender, to his rigid control, on his magical island. She’ll fade into the background of his tortured existence, unless she can convince him she can steal anything, including the one thing he believes he’s lost forever.
Tricked by the Monkey King, Li Tieguai lives in shame and surrounds himself with other outcasts, like the spirit animal Cat. When the vibrant and sultry Wen is assigned to his household, and offers to thieve for him, she might just steal more than he bargained for. Yet Li isn’t the only one who can resist Wen. The spirit Cat offers Li a solution to his problems, but to atone for his past he’ll have to face a future without Wen.

Notable scene:

Store me. Ha. The Matchmaker would soon learn she couldn’t get rid of Wen so easily.
He continued to regard her with his stern gaze, distaste evident in the hard set of his square jaw. She lifted a brow and returned his rude stare. “Look, I don’t want to be here. You clearly don’t want me here. Why did you let her walk away?” she blew out an exasperated breath and crossed her arms.
“That is not for you to question, little mortal.” His accent was crisp and formal, like she expected an immortal’s to be. After all, he basically transcended time.
As he dropped his hand from his head and stalked toward her, she straightened her shoulders. Up close, he was even more intimidating. From farther away, he hadn’t appeared quite so…large.
Or sinful.
His eyes…they weren’t black, more like the dark hue of a night sky, the hint of glinting stars in their depths. Their sharp angles suggested a cunning, clever mind.

Note: I received a free ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Rematch is the second installment of the Chinese Zodiac series. The novella itself stands alone, although the heroine and her man from the first book make a delightful cameo toward the end.

Just as in the first, the story is intriguing, the chemistry sizzling, and the mythos fascinating. If you've read any of my other reviews, you know that I have high standards for my romance. This book (and the other!) isn't just a romance. The world-building is great, and the more I read, the more intrigued I am by the Plague God, the Red Death, and how our matched up protagonists are going to kick some ass at the end. But don't worry--if you're a romance fan, Wen and Li's relationship is believable and, well, hot.

This little gem is a good introduction to Rachael's work. You can read it first--and then you'll definitely want to dive into the next one.

*Originally published on book blog WillReadforFeels.com
*I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

I’ve been a fan of Rachael Slate’s since I got my hands on a copy of Book 1 of her Chinese Zodiac Romance series, Trancing the Tiger. So I went into a slight tizzy when I learned that, while waiting for Book 2, By the Horns, the author would be releasing a novella entitled Rematch. This went live on May 12, and I was lucky enough to get my hands on an ARC for it. Because it was a short, sweet read, I blazed through it in less than two hours. Then, just for the hell of it, I read it a second time the next day.

If you’re expecting a continuation of Trancing the Tiger, you’ll be disappointed. But the good news is that this novella can work as a stand alone read set in the same world as the rest of the novels. And fans of TTT will be pleased by cameos from Sheng, Lucy, and the Matchmaker, so it’s all to the good.

The two characters in this novel are Li, one of the Eight Immortals, who once had the power to heal but was tricked into making a decision that denied him that power by the Monkey King, and Wen, who lost loved ones to the Red Death and wishes to join the war against the Plague God by becoming one of the Lotus League. She too has made a poor decision that has her flunking out of Lotus League training, and she’s brought to Li’s island by the Matchmaker, ostensibly to become a servant here, like so many other washouts before her.

The attraction between the two characters is potent and immediate, and despite the novel’s brevity resulting in fewer steamy scenes than are found in Ms. Slate’s first novel, these still are hot enough that you’ll want to read Rematch with an icy drink within arm’s reach.

I thoroughly enjoyed the juxtaposition of stuffy, tortured immortal (Li) with the sassy and saucy thief (Wen), and I felt that even in such a short work, these characters really popped for me. I would maybe have liked to see more of their individual histories, and I feel that a new reader might like more explanation as to what the Lotus League is and who the Eight Immortals are, so I can’t quite give it a five star review (much as the depth of my fandom is tempting me to), but given that it’s a novella and not a full novel, I find myself more forgiving on this point. However, these leave me hoping that we’ll learn more about the other Immortals (and about the Matchmaker) later on, and perhaps we’ll see more of Li and Wen then as well.

If you’re looking for a quick, steamy paranormal/urban fantasy read, this is definitely a book you should pick up. It’s not just because Li has abs and Wen takes great delight in running her fingers over them (and over other parts of him), but also because, if you’re a fan of the series, you’ll relish the glimpse into how the rest of the world—outside the 12 Chosen, that is—has dealt with or been affected by the Red Death.

She would never be his because she COULD never be his.

“Wen was an enchanting mortal. That was the problem. A mortal.” WOW!! I wasn't sure if I would want to read, nor would I like a story without Sheng, Lucy and the rest of their 'kongsi' in it, but WOW!! Rachael has mesmerized me yet again! I shouldn’t have been so “surprised” or have doubted her since her debut novel was (and still is) FANTASTIC! But you know how it is when you love a book, you are convinced that nothing will compare to it and even worse, it might actually take away for the charm of the first book! Silly Cherri! There was nothing to worry about at all! Other than the ending coming too soon, as it usually does with books you love! I actually went back to read Trancing the Tiger again to refresh my memory - and thoroughly enjoyed it again I might add - and while there was the odd reference, it really wasn't necessary, enjoyable as all hell, but unnecessary. (Although I do get the impression that this story will play a part in the book or books to come!) This story is about Li, an immortal in exile trying to atone for his past, and Wen who is mortal, all alone since recently losing her brother and failing the Lotus League test, both wanting more but thinking they do not deserve it. I absolutely loved this story! It is a little more on the sadder side, it won't make you cry, maybe a little more solemn or heart wrenching, would be better terms. However the things that happen, the others involved - The Matchmaker (need I say more?) - the truths discovered, the surprises, the mystery surrounding Wen & Li all add up to one sweetly enchanting tail of a story! Pun fully intended! Rachael has yet again shown her amazingly talented prowess with another fantastic & beautifully written story involving the Chinese Zodiacs!! I cannot wait for more! I am completely entranced!

Rematch is the novella in the Chinese Zodiac Romance Series. We first meet up with Wen who has failed out of the Matchmaker's Lotus League, and is brought to Li's "misfit of an island." Li, is a ancestor to Sheng, who was introduced in Trancing the Tiger. It's interesting how all the chosen, immortal and 'misfits' all intertwine with one another. While we are getting to know Li and Wen, we find out more of one of the creatures that lives on Li's island. By the end you have a deep understanding of why Wen was brought here. I was seriously wondering if a full story could be made with these two, without it being forced into play. The answer is yes! Ms. Slate was able to keep the story real and believable within this short time frame. I am one who hates spoilers, but be on the lookout for a guest appearance if you will of some familiar faces from TTT. I laugh at the fact I am in love with Wen and Li's story, who would have thought I'd love them just about as much as our first couple. Don't worry even though this is novella, all the heat, sass and sexiness is included. Looking forward to the next full length novel, in this series. 5/5 ** I received a ARC of Rematch in exchange for an honest review**

I was thrilled to have another installment of the Chinese Zodiac Romance series released. I couldn't wait to get my hands on the second novel after reading the brilliant debut Trancing the Tiger. I was worried I may be hyping it up too much. Expecting greatness from Rachael after her amazing debut, but I was not disappointed!

Wen and Li are both great characters. The storyline is awesome! There is great development and plot right from the get go. I liked the intrigue that Li's character offered. This novel was a bit different from the first novel but in a good way. It kept the story moving.

I enjoyed the snippets that referenced the first in the series, but felt they were not entirely necessary. Rematch is a great stand alone novel.

If you liked Trancing the Tiger; enjoy unique shifter stories; like a good plot and characters; or are tired of reading the same romance over and over, this book is for you! I highly recommend it and her debut.

Another Li to add to my list of Book Boyfriends!!! Super awesome story with great characters. Loved Wen, she is super feisty and naughty, definitely a fun character and one that was perfect for Li, the very serious tormented Immortal. The story is very entertaining and it has some super sexy sex scenes.
I loved that we got to see Li Sheng and Lucy even if for just a little bit in the story. The Matchmaker being sneaky as usual was also a great character to have in the story and I loved the ending. I loved how the author worked the animal into the story and how they were able to be a couple and stay together.
Romantic story with some action, mystery and steam.
We have a great HEA ending. Really loved this one.
Recommended for a fun romantic paranormal story.
You don't really need to read book 1 Trancing the Tiger before this one but you should if you haven't just because it is also a super awesome book.

I received this book from the author in return for a fair and honest review.

As I fell in love with all the Chinese mythology that Rachael Slate put down in book 1, Trancing The Tiger, it came as no surprise to me that I loved that aspect of this book just as much. This time, it's a bit more 'specialised' so instead of reading about the whole of the Chinese horoscope and mythology, you learn about one specific place - Li's place.

Li himself is a tortured hero which always goes down a treat with me. He is matched by Wen with the feisty attitude who stands toe to toe with him and won't take any rubbish. There are also cameo shots from Lucy and Sheng, as well as the Matchmaker.

The story is fast-paced and well thought out, the dialogue is sharp and sassy and it is hot! Altogether, another fantastic book from Rachael Slate. Definitely recommended.

wow. I am loving the Chinese Zodiac books.
How to put into words my feelings on the book....
I loved how the Matchmaker plays a role that no one first thinks of. how she puts 2 people together whom at first don't think they belong together than end up making each other whole.
Wen and Li both looking for a place where they belong and find that with each other is that place. they use the monkey kings ways on himself to correct a wrong doing the monkey king made.
Lucy and Li making an appearance at the ending showing how the Matchmaker is able to use Lucy's gifts. that ties the books together along with the animal spirits but they both can stand alone.
I cannot wait for the next book.
I received this book as an arc but the review is mine :)

Loved Rematch. We get a look at characters from the background. Plus we get to revisit characters or from Trancing the Tiger. I was all for the spirit Cat in this one. These two characters Wen and Li Tieguai are considered outcasts. Li Tieguai believes he deserves any suffering he endures. Now stuck on the island Wen will do anything to redeem herself to join the Lotus League and get the justice she seeks. Li Tieguai wants nothing to do with Wen, but the pull is just too tempting to ignore. Both characters are looking for redemption will they find it? What will it cost them?

This is my second Rachael Slate book, and I loved revisiting the world she created in Trancing The Tiger. It is a much shorter story, so faster paced, but it still has depth and awesome characters. Wen and Li were great leads, the storyline was fun to read, and it was nice to see a cameo from Sheng and Lucy from the first book. I wasn't sure if I would be a permanent convert to this genre, but I think I've changed my mind, and I look forward to the next installment!

This is the second book on Chinese Zodiac series but is a standalone with its own HEA

In this book we meet Sheng’s elder, Li Tieguai who has been living on Fangzhan Island. He was a handsome man initially but after a small hiccup when his servant cremated his body, he had to reincarnate into the nearest body and ended up an elderly lame man. He roamed the world using his magical gourd to heal those inflicted by great illnesses, like the Black Plague. Then a few decades ago he was tricked by the Monkey King and his magical gourd was drained. He now isolates himself away in an effort to pay penance for his egotistical use of his gift.

The Matchmaker, appears on his doorstep with Wen, she failed her Lotus course when she tried to hard to impress and now has nowhere else to go. Will Li be able to deal with Wen? Will he successfully train the little thief and will she EVER obey his house rules?

I love this series! They are a fresh take on the shifter genre, using the animal Zodiac from Chinese Mythology. There are great scenes and lets just say I was fanning myself a whole lot during the first love scene between Wen and Li! For a man who has not been laid in..awhile he sure remembers what to do!!

Great writing, snappy storyline and sympathetic and engaging characters - what else do you want???

Now I want more!

This was a no less interesting follow-up to perhaps my favorite paranormal of the year and I am looking forward to seeing how the pieces that were set into place will play out in the series.

Wen has one driving force, she wants to be part of the Lotus league to eradicate Red Death. Having lost her brother to the disease she has more motivation that she knows what do with. This motivation is also what got her kicked from her training and banished to be a maid.

Having been tricked by the Monkey King, the immortal Li lives a life of shame and solitude. He cannot forgive himself for the path he chose and lives life away from others with a band of misfits. His newest misfit has the potential to be his undoing. Wen is feisty and rules are lost on her which makes Li's blood boil. He likes order and certainty, she likes to make him crazy.

This two have insane chemistry and push each other's buttons, making this a real enjoyable read. As this story unfolds you learn some interesting information that will be used in the grand scheme of story that I am super excited to see play out.

Wen is forced on Li by the Matchmaker after failing the test to become of the elite assassins of the Lotus League. Li is hiding from the world after losing his magic.

This story is wrapped in the legends and mysticism of Chinese culture. There is much more to Wen's presence on Li's island than the Matchmaker leads them to believe.

Rachael's writing is so natural and she makes it seem so effortless in the telling of this story weaved with magic and mysticism. You find yourself immersed in this world and carried away with the story and the characters.

Wen and Li can be described as complete opposites but have more similarities than differences in common. Wen is a fighter and will never give up, even when it all seems hopeless. Li has resigned himself to his lonely, secluded existence after his loss. Wen's presence shakes things up in more than one way and brings Li a new perspective on life.

I loved the story telling and the flow of the story. It all seemed so natural. Rachael Slate is fast becoming a firm favourite of mine.

At first I was put off a little by Wen. She seemed a little over the top sexy and sultry, but as her story developed and I learned more about her I warmed up to her. Li was almost an instant mystery that I wanted to figure out. The unfolding of his secrets had me turning pages to find out more.

The myths woven in the story line were well done. I love the concept of Chinese culture inside a paranormal romance, and from what I do remember of the Chinese folklore the author has done a wonderful job giving readers just the amount of information they need and tickling their interest to learn more.

This story didn't grab me as fast and hard as the first novel in the series, but it did grab me. Before I knew it I was scrolling past the last page and really wanting more. All in all I'll keep waiting for the next story set to come out this summer.

A Review of Rematch by Rachael Slate

Lonely Immortal vs Avenger - 5 stars

This is a short book between the first and second book that will be coming out soon. I was happy to learn more about the Chinese Zodiak characters and how they are all connected. Li, who was an immortal with the power of healing, has been living as an outcast the last thirty years after being tricked by the Monkey King. The Matchmaker shows up with Wen, who is to be a servant for his home after she failed a test to join the Lotus League, where she had planned on avenging her brother from the Red Death that was released by the Plague Gods. I am still looking forward to the next book in the series and seeing how all of the 12 characters fit together.

A lifelong fascination with mythology and Asian culture led me to Rachel Slate's Trancing The Tiger. The excellence of that book led me to Rematch.

Having read and loved Trancing The Tiger, I thought myself prepared for this behind the scenes peek into the world of the Immortals. I was wrong.

While there are similar elements, even guest appearances from a few of the characters from Trancing The Tiger, the story is still fresh and compelling. The characters, Li and Wen, are believable and you can't help but root for them to find their redemption and each other.

Like Trancing The Tiger, there is a supernatural element, an animal spirit, and intrigue on a level that no mere mortal could hope to fathom.

The writing is smooth, sprinkled with delightful tidbits of Malaysian culture and language that demonstrates not only a dedication to faithfulness to her subject but a genuine love of that subject. No one with a mere passing interest could possibly hope to write like this.

While reading Trancing The Tiger is not really necessary before reading Rematch, I would recommend it since it will give you a point of reference, especially for the prominent characters making a guest appearances from the first installment of this series.

For myself, I will be awaiting Book 2, 2.5--any and all installments that follow--most eagerly.

Li and Wen are fun and interesting and oh so stubborn, they make the book worth reading. If you can focus on them you will really enjoy this book. The writing in the book seemed a little choppy at times for me, it was hard for me to keep going, too much bouncing between Wen and Li. Overall the book was fun, and held a few what ifs, and some mystery and of course a hot steamy love scene.

I would give his book 3 out of 5 fangs

Immortals are Hot!!!

Slate is a new Author to me and didn’t disappoint. Even though this isn’t my typical read, she kept me interested and very intrigued throughout. Li and Wen are well developed characters and he story is well written. I love how Wen’s character develops throughout and how her and Li bond. This is definitely a story you can read without having to read the whole series, but I think it is worth reading the series too. :)

Hot attraction and sizzling chemistry spice up this unique and highly entertaining read. Wen and Li's story is engaging and entertaining. The book itself is created with a wonderful and interesting blend of shifter romance, mythology, and a post-apocalyptic world. A great story and a terrific romance.

What Goes Before The Fall

This is a story about an immortal allowing his vanity to let himself be tricked to the detriment of mankind. And a human woman who allowed her pride to get her kicked out of where she wanted to be to get revenge for her brother. But just maybe, they can find their redemption in each other. Enjoy I did.
