This was a fun short read featuring McCall, her adorable dog Junkyard and Scipio. I really like these characters and I knew I had to read this novella in which Scipio convinces McCall she needs a vacation. Ofcourse nothing is ever easy and her vacation leads to more trouble than she expected. I don't want to spoil anything about the plot as it is so short, but I found it a satisfying reas. And I like how the author managed to put a short adventure and an interesting new side character all in such a short read.
Rounded to 4 Stars. I enjoyed BEARADISE, the 2nd Prequel to the Standalone Fractured Stars Sci-fi novel. Being quite short, it read quickly, providing the backstory for the cyborg character, Sebastian Sears, mentioned in Fractured Stars. Each time I pick up a Buroker novel, I am successfully pulled far away, into another time and place.
1= dnf/What was that?; 2= Nope, not for me; 3= This was okay/fairly good & might or might not read it again; 3.5= I enjoyed it & might read it again; 4= I LIKED THIS A LOT; I would read it again; 5= I Loved This; it was great! & most likely will read again ((I SELDOM give 5 Stars).
BEARADISE LODGE, pub in 2018, is an additional peek into the Fractured Stars world (a story which immediately follows the prequel novella Junkyard, preceding Fractured Stars). All 3 stories are set in Buroker’s Fallen Empire world a short period before the fall of the Imperial Empire. I previously read and enjoyed (via audiobook) the Mandrake series and have begun checking out other books/series by Buroker. The 3 Fractured Stars titles seemed like a good place to start.
BEARADISE LODGE follows successful and independent Skip Tracer McCall Richter on a brief 4 day vacation after over 2 years of solid work. McCall’s business partner and colleague has selected a rental unit for her on a wooded moonscape for a bit of rest and relaxation. And this is exactly what she finds there - or not.
Recommended to readers who enjoy: > Novellas and/or Quick stories easily read before bed or while waiting in long queues or airports > Entertaining rather than hardcore Sci-fi > Space Operas > Action Adventure > Animals in their fiction > Humor in their reading > Epilogues, Prequels, Short Stories

You know an author is one of my favorites if I read their novellas. This one was really fun, the only flaw being that I knew the strange guy wasn't going to be the love interest because I'd already read Fractured Stars. I kinda liked him better than the real love interest too.... That caveat aside, this was a fun romp complete with dog.
It's just a vacation, what could go wrong? Of course this is McCall so anything could. A pleasant short read to just fill in more of her life and travels.
Fast-paced, good introduction to the main character. It's a very quick story but accomplishes a lot in a little space. I'll check out the other prequel novella Junkyard.
