Risdaverse #4

When She Belongs

Rate this book
He’s the biggest jerk in the galaxy.

I can live with being stuck on the far end of space. I can live with having to spend weeks on an abandoned station in an asteroid belt. Sure, I don’t belong, but I’ve got my book and my eight-legged attack cat with me. I should be fine.

I’m not fine.

My alien host, Jerrok, is a jerk. He’s surly and unpleasant. He hasn’t bathed in years. He’s part cyborg - and all those parts seem to be falling to pieces. He’s the one in charge of this remote station, which means we’re forced to interact. It’s an absolutely miserable situation for both of us…

…until I realize that all his anger and bluster is covering the fact that he’s thoughtful and understanding. He’s protective, too, keeping me safe when the bad guys approach. When I get hurt, he’s the one tenderly caring for my wounds.

Jerrok is also intensely, utterly lonely, just like me.

As time passes, I start to wonder…maybe where I belong isn’t a place…but a person.

Ruby Dixon is an author of Science Fiction Romance. She likes fated mates, baby-filled epilogues, and cinnamon roll heroes. She also likes to write biographies of herself in the third person, because it feels more important that way.

Ruby also loves coffee and dirty books and will probably be a cat lady at some point. :)

Broken beauty and the cyborg beast!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Romance: 💛🖤💜💚
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌏🌍🌏
Character development: 🤒😌🙃😍

The heroine: Sophie - she has been working with three brothers on a space pirate ship is feeling like she is in over her head. She doesn’t know how to work any of the technology on the ship, can’t read Messekah to figure it out and she can’t kill any other life forms when they are in the midst of an attack. So she is not too surprised when the brothers leave her with a friend who runs a salvage operation on an abandoned asteroid when they have a dangerous mission.

The Hero: Jerrok - part cyborg, Jerrok is a grouchy loner who likes only his own company, so when the brothers force him to watch over Sophie for a favor they are owed, he can’t say much, and ends up taking her and her pet cat/reptile in while the brothers go on their mission.

The Story: Sophie was previously enslaved by the Praxians for six years and the brothers think of her as a sister, so warn Jerrok to take it easy on her. He feels for her a bit since she was enslaved and he has his own issues from being hurt in the war. He is in pain quite a bit because of the spare parts used to fix him up. He also has PTSD and suffers from nightmares from his time as a prisoner of war.

I quite liked this story about two damaged people coming together. They both just wanted to be left alone and ending up finding out that being alone together is much better than just being alone. I also liked that this one took place on an abandoned station on a asteroid where Jerrok lives and works salvaging what he can from old ships and technology sold to him from pirates.

Jerrok’s cyborg parts were given to him from his government after he was lost parts of himself in the war, but the Government didn’t care and let the soldiers down by giving them sub-standard parts that are rusting and cause him a lot of pain. I kept wanting them to find a fortune among the salvage so he could get new and high tech parts.

The book was told in dual points of view and was narrated by Mason Lloyd and Jillian Macie who both did a great job. I enjoyed listening to this and I like both of their voices and they are good readers.

Oh man I loved this one. I love how Ruby always finds a way to change things up so her story lines don't get stale. I love cyborgs and I love her Messekahs and in this one you kinda get both. I love Jarrok, with his poor, lonely, grumpy butt. Sophie was sweet and needed patience and love to overcome her trauma from slavery. They were so good together, helping heal each other. Great addition to this series.

➕ What I liked :

Interesting main characters.

Good romantic build up and chemistry.

Good plot.

Good Slow-burn.

The alien “cat”.

That the hero/Jerrok is a junker and comes from a poor background…. Unlike many of the other Mesakkah that come from rich or powerful families.

Disability‎ rep. ( the hero)

➖ What I disliked:

Repetitive character description/character choice ( in different ways it is harped on about the size difference between the main characters…. the heroine keeps being described as small and little/dainty, fragile/delicate etc. by the hero (I think it was around 15 times during the story the heroine was described this way)…. But also the hero being described as tall/big and muscular etc. )

The character description/character choice is formulaic.

Dainty/small heroine and huge hulking tall alien.
(It would have been really interesting to maybe see many more characters like Kate or Devi, Iolanthe, Leilani…or a combination of the four as the heroine/FMC in this story (and other books/series from this auhtor)…. Someone that was tall+sturdy or athletic+statuesque that could hold their own in a different way and not seem fragile/frail or be fragile/frail…. Or maybe more Mesakkah or Sa-khui female main characters.

Sophie’s past as a sex slave and the trauma and effects of that is addressed/handled in a weird way and it is clear and obvious that she has psychological scars…but at the same time so much of it is glossed over.

The side characters from the other books/series …. are annoying and super nosy/ intrusive about Jerrok & Sophie’s relationship etc.

Some minor pacing problems in the middle of the story… where the story dragged a little bit.

****Note to self: Do Not re-read this book again.****

3.5 stars -- As per usual, I really enjoyed the characters & world in this entry to the Risdaverse. That said, I think this suffered structurally from being a serialized story originally... probably would have been stronger if there had been an edit out of ~20% of the book

When she belongs de Ruby Dixon libro 4 serie A Risdaverse tale

No estoy bien.

¡Amé a Jerrok!

When She Belongs is part of the Risdaverse sci-fi alien romance series by Ruby Dixon that takes place on a farming planet. This one has forced proximity and a grumpy broody alien hero!

Sophie has been working on the space pirate ship Little Sister but ends up at an abandoned station in an asteroid belt with the grumpiest jerk in the galaxy, Jerrok! Hoping to make it through with her book and her 8-legged cat, Sophie is planning on just avoiding grumpy Jerrok. But when she gets injured and he has to take care of her, they start to grow closer! I loved the forced proximity and the caretaking scenes, he’s one of those heroes who hates everyone but her, they also both connect over trauma in their pasts. He has PTSD from the war and nightmares, he also has a mechanical arm and a lot of scars. She was kept as a human slave for 9 years and has abuse and assault in her past as well. I liked how they take a lot of time together and he makes her feel safe and cares for her. A grumpy broody hero is always a fun time and this one is pierced too! I loved how much she loved romance books, she talks about her love for her copy of Outlander often and then starts reading Johanna Lindsey’s Warrior’s Woman too which was fun!

I do think this one could have been a little shorter, most in this series are novella length. So that’s really my only thing with the pacing of this one feeling long at times. This one does have one of my fav covers in the series though!

I melt at that. "I know. But I wanted to come home."

Well, this tickled all my sci-fi tropes in the right way with a lovely grumps-to-friends-to-lovers slowburn romance, alien pets!!, gardening, cool sci-fi stuff that seemed more legit than the other books, a hefty length to the actual book (*giggles in warrior jokes* iykyk), and a wonderful plot that was just the right amount (for me) of angst, pining, adventure, mystery, and action!! And of course more Bethiah WHO NEEDS HER OWN BOOK ASAP PLEASE AND THANK YOU and if I don't get some bi action I'm thiiiiiis close to writing fanfic for this universe (which means I will start writing some in a few weeks okay) so yeah after Angie's Gladiator this is my fav Ruby Dixon book.

A human x alien romance where the h is finally a free woman in the universe, but still hasn't quite found her place--while the H is a crotchety half-cyborg loner who is tasked with watching over said human and her killer pet until she can be picked up.

All the while thinking that he can't wait for her to get out of his space- until they both realize they might be exactly what each other needs to heal and become better individuals as well as loving team together?

Yes to all of this.

When She Belongs is book 4 in the Risdaverse series. The beginning was very enjoyable because I love a grumpy male and a sweet female but it was so long over 80 chapters that I lost interest. I am enjoying this series so I do plan to continue.

Story : 💗💗💗💗
Characters : 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
Romance : 💗💗💗💗💗
Steam : 🔥🔥🔥

This is one of the most touching book I have ever read. Yes, the miscommunication trope got old real fast, but it doesn't matter. I looooooved Jerrock and Sophie and how they healed each other. The steamy scenes were so emotional and Jerrock asked for her consent every step of the way, which is something I rarely read. They were so patient with each other. I cried a lot just because of how beautiful their love story was. It's one of those rare books that heals something in you.

Don't be fooled by Ice planet barbarian. I think it is the same species (na'vi aliens from avatar but with horns), but it has NOTHING to do with it. This book will break your heart only to stich it back together. It may be a little too soon to say this, but I think this one has everything to be my favorite read of the year. It's a slow burn, grumpy x sunshine and forced proximity.

Just read it. I don't care it's alien romance. Just. Read. It.

Oh man, I forgot how much I love this book. Bumping to 5 stars.

Off the bat, TW for past assault/abuse - the heroine was kept as a slave for 9 years. The hero was in war and was tortured, he has PTSD.

Sophie was rescued in a previous book in the series, When She Purrs, and this one picks up with her “riding along” with three corsair (space pirate) brothers on their jobs. She woos a valuable killer cat with 8 legs and the corsairs drop her off on a distant trash planet to stow away the beast.

On the planet is Jerrok the jerk. Part cyborg, kinda smelly, total grump.

There’s so much to love about this book. The forced proximity, enemies to lovers, grumpy hero who’s secretly a marshmallow. Both of them working through past traumas. Injuries or past injuries so they take care of one another (hurt comfort?!). A silly pet. Finding where you belong.

Oh, how I loved this book. Jerrok and Sophie ran off with my heart. I usually always avoid books with two broken people because the angst and trauma overwhelms the story.

But Ruby Dixon is pure genius; these two characters make each other stronger and both Jerrok and Sophia slowly blossom as they fall in love and see beneath the wounds if they carry as individuals and as a couple.

Slepinir, the protective carinoux, stole the story.

Bethiah, a pirate and Jerrok’s cousin, initially got on my nerves with antics but I loved the close family vibe between the cousins.

It was awesome to reunite with the crew of Jabborwok.

Outstanding! Highly recommended.

While I really liked Jerrok and Kim at first, they kind of wore out their welcome for me.
They kept going cirlces around each other over and over due to not communicating. It got old so quick. I have a very low tolerance for: "I will talk to him about my feelings! *Overhears snippet of something* Oh no, I can never tell him :((", ony for the pov to switch and now we get the exact same from Jerrok...

And at the author note at the end of the book it says:
When She Purrs was going to be a short novella I was going to do to help 'give back' for those that didn't have a lot of time to sit down and read a book thanks to the pandemic. [...] Purrs was supposed to be a novella, but it turned into a novel. A long one.

Maybe that had something to do with it? I don't know. But personally I think this story would've worked better if we trimmed ~100 pages of circle going.

Anyways!

Jerrok: I liked him. He was a big tsundere in the beginning.
I only tolerate it because we served together. It's not that I enjoy it.

Suuuuure, Jerrok.
I also really liked the "station trash" angle to his past and how that affected his personality and view of himself.
And ofc, I love a "broken" hero. Lap that shit right up.

Kim: liked her too.
He won't insist for himself, so I'll insist for him.

I liked how protective she became of Jerrok.

But while this isn't BDSM as I see it, Jerrok does call Kim "good girl". And she's super into that! Which is great! But I am most def not, so that made the sex scenes less enjoyable to me.

Final rating: 2,5 stars

Some final praise: one of the reasons I wrote off Dixon initially was because of what I perceived to be casual dubcon with no warning in the first IPB book. But this book has a triggerwarning in its first pages. While I'd like this to be availble in the summary of the book, I do love that Dixon is trying. Much appreciated.

Oh my, Jerrok the biggest jerk in the galaxy is the Cyborg for me.

As always Ruby has a way of pulling you in and every story is more exciting than the last. The story follows Sophie a former sex slave for almost a decade who was rescued by Corsairs. Jerrok is a junker who lives out in the middle of nowhere on an abandoned station and she needs to hide out with him while the three va Sithai brothers go on a treasure hunt. If only he had a blaster, read to find out.
For my romance lovers

-No OM/OW drama
-past trauma ( rape/ torture/kidnap)
-piercings ;-)
-epilogue 16 months out
-enemies to friends/friends to lovers
-Veteran
-arguing between the characters
-No BC

2024 reread:
This is my fave risdaverse novel because I love both of them so much. They have vastly different trauma experiences, but are aware enough of what triggers are and how to work through panic to help each other through hard things. This book also deals with chronic pain and some depression. There’s a messed up narrative in the world about how having a disability or chronic illness is inspiration porn rather than a complex experience that can severely impact mood and the way that person interacts with others. This handled the mood issues pretty well imo, especially when Sophie understood when Jerrok needed space and he learned to communicate about that need in a less abrasive way. Their love story was slow and sweet.

Spice: 5/5

SOME SPOILERS IN TRIGGER WARNINGS

Triggers: depression, chronic pain, PTSD, nightmares, mentions of slavery and SA, mention of torture, gun violence, violence, murder in self defense, light gore, attempted SA (not between MCs), forced nudity

OG review:
So… I figured out I love praise. Thanks Ruby for covering all the kinks in your books!

So I had read every book in this series except this one…ngl I only skipped it because every other book is a cute short novella and then this one decided to be nearly 500 pages long (for what reason?!) and that’s too long for the mood I’m in for this series anywayyy to start a different RD series (corsair brothers) it was recommended to read this one first as it introduces the characters so I finally bit the bullet and it was pretty cute…definitely would’ve been just as good with a couple hundred less pages but 🤷🏼‍♀️ oh well. My fave part was definitely the cat alien 🥹🥹🤍 *read as an audiobook*

Second read: 3.5 stars. I like this series, but this book isn’t my favorite of the bunch... it lacked action for a good chunk of the story. The hero and heroine both had major issues they needed to work through, and their relationship progressed reaaaaaally slowly.

Safe; heroine was a sexual slave, repeatedly raped in the past and had to move past her (understandable) issues with sex and intimacy

I adore Sophie and Jerrok! Ruby Dixon melted my heart again with this couple, it’.s a hate to love romance. This read was such an enjoyable sci-fi romance. The main characters are deep, traumatized and very much perfect for each other. Their coming together is a journey in healing and love that was a delight to read. The protective alien cat was a fun add to the story and I hope we get to see “kitten” offspring in another risdaverse tale.

another really good one

Man I loved this one. Only down side I wish the epilogue was longer. Like I wanna see them down the road but I’m guessing we may in a diff book.

Our H is a war vet who was tortured and given bad low grade prosthetics bc he was basically the alien equivalent of dirt poor. He lives on a junk station in the middle of no where and basically buys and junk, scraps it and resells the parts.
Our h is a human slave who was recently rescued and was dumped in our H while the aliens she was with go on a mission and here their story begins
-kinda has a enemies to lovers vibe but their never really energies … maybe grumpy/sunshine?
-cute cat like pet that’s fiercely protective of h
-we get some possessiveness from our H but mostly protective
- these two just in their own little world which I loved
-good little story line drama and resolution
-we see some other characters that I’m not sure where their from maybe the corsairs series that I haven’t read.
-we never find out whet happened to the brothers.. 👎🏻
-the epilogue isn’t long enough I needed a bit more to wrap it up for me.

But on to the next. This author is always a pallet cleanser and I forgot how much I love alien romance lol, it’s hard to find good ones and Ruby Dixon is def one of the best even if they are super sweet and don’t give me that OTT edge I love.
