It takes only half a second…

…Like those commercials where a crash test dummy rockets forward at high speed and slams into a wall.
…In that instant, every thought in Emma Lynn Walsh’s head collides with mine—every thought, memory, hope, disappointment and dream.
…I open my eyes to see Dr. Walsh peering at me, a puzzled expression on her face.

“Let—go—of—me,” I order though clenched teeth.

Mira wants to die. She’s attempted suicide twice already, and failed. Every time she comes in contact with another person, skin to skin, that person’s psyche uploads into hers. While her psychologist considers this a gift, for Mira, it’s a curse from which she cannot escape.

To make matters worse, Mira’s father is being investigated in the deaths of several volunteer test subjects of a miracle drug. Shortly after Mira’s mother starts asking questions, she ends up in a coma. Although her father claims it was an accident, thanks to her “condition” Mira knows the truth…but proving it just might get her killed!

Contact was a fun young adult book. It didn't blow me out of the water, but it kept me interested enough to keep flipping the pages.

As the title implies, whenever Mira touches anyone, she gets their whole life history downloaded into her mind. It's a fairly new phenomenon, she's pretty freaked out, and she's already attempted suicide twice when the book opens.
Full Disclosure Time:
I had just finished a story about a girl with powers who felt driven to kill herself before I started this one. I'm not sure if it impacted my enjoyment of this one, but I thought it deserved mentioning.

The main story revolves around Mira and her love interest Scooby-Dooing it around town trying to figure out why Mira has this power. When her mother falls into a fishy diabetic coma after a party, the plot only thickens.
And as the two of them dig into her past, they find out that nothing is what it seems...

There's really not a whole lot to either complain or rave about with Contact. It was one of those books that I couldn't put down while I was reading it, but a few days later..I couldn't recall much about it.

I have to say, I wasn't all that convinced that it was realistic when it came to Mira's reaction to what happened to her mother, but I can't say much else without spoiling the story. Otherwise, this was a decent page-turner.

NetGalley provided a digital arc for review.

I’d like to thank NetGalley and Hallowed Ink Press for providing me with a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

I was looking for a fast-paced book, and I found it in Contact. It just doesn’t let the reader go. When I first started it, I told myself, only ten minutes. I only managed to drag myself away from it thirty minutes later (that’s how long it took for the rational side of my brain to seize control and remind me that I had to wake up at 4:30 a.m. the next morning).

Mira is a very strong main characters. Most important of all, in my opinion, she felt human. She had moments when she was angry, when she was scared, when she was doubtful… And I loved that about her. I wish she was a real person, so I could be friends with her (no touching, of course). Speaking of no touching, it must have been terribly hard for her to spend her entire life avoiding human contact, something that we tend to crave and actually need. As for David, he was more and more likeable, but I do have to say that, compared to Mira, he came across as soft sometimes.

The secondary characters (Helen, Mira’s mother, Uncle Ramón and the Beitners) were also amazing. The ones that touched me the most were, for reasons that will be obvious to anyone that reads it, were the Beitners.

I loved the mystery part of the story. The author kept me guessing (and wrongly at that) until the end. And then, when the mystery was solved, the story launched into breathtaking action and more revelations (one of them made me disgusted, but read it and see if you wouldn’t be disgusted too). However, I don’t think I got all the facts I wanted, so I’m really hoping there is a sequel (especially if it means getting more of the Beitners. If they want a granddaughter, I’m up for grabs).

What a great read. The story had me glued to the pages. Contact had everything a reader seeks to escape between the pages. Mystery, romance, powers, drama and action. We follow a 16 year old girl who feels she is cursed with a horrible ability, what makes it worse it that no one believes her. She struggles to hold it together, feeling even more pressured by the fact that her father is a very important man and always in the media. When her mother is murder she will find her abilities a very crucial tool to solving the murder.

This book doesn't have the most complex story, but the author makes it compelling by the way the chapters are structured. I felt compelled to keep turning the pages to see what Marcus and his band would do next.

Contact had me hooked from chapter one! The idea that you could know someone's thoughts and memories from a single touch was intriguing. Add just the right amount of romance and suspense and you end up with a very exciting story. Hoping to see this as a series.

The Rock of Ivanore by Laurisa White Reyes is a fantasy novel for middle school through adult readers. It is the first book of the Celestine Chronicles. Marcus is an orphan in a small town. He is raised and considered an apprentice by the elderly enchanter Zyll. When the annual Great Quest is announced in Quendel, to find the Rock of Ivanore. The outcome of the quest will decide the future of Marcus and a handful of other fifteen year old boys from the village. The boys set of on the quest with no idea what the Rock is or where it can be found. Marcus must reach deep within himself to develop new powers of magic and find the strength to survive the wild lands and fierce enemies he encounters as he searches for the illusive Rock. If he succeeds, he will live a life of honor; if he fails, he will live a life of menial labor in shame. With more twists and turns than a labyrinth, and a story in which nothing is at it seems, this tale of deception and discovery keeps readers in suspense until the end.

The Rock of Ivanore is a solid fantasy quest story, complete with characters coming of age, magic, massive battles, deceit, and life changing secrets. This book takes the classic genre and makes is feel new again. I think part of the success here is the characters. While many parts of the story might sound familiar, something here seems to make everything loose the 'I've read this before' feeling that you might expect. Familiar bits; Marcus is an orphan with magical knowledge and little confidence in it, there is a strong but selfish boy in the group that is a bully; a sidekick for the bully; a chubby asthmatic boy, and the typically quiet by general good boy all on a quest together but still also kind of competing against each other. That might sound cookie cutter, but while reading the world and character building is so well done that it all seemed new to me. Marcus is honestly a 'good boy'. He might not always make the right decision, but he tries to always do what is morally right even if it puts him in danger. Kelvin also tries to do what is right, but is more pragmatic about everyone's safety.

The characters that I have not mentioned yet are my favorites. Bryn is a Croc- a shape shifting man eater from the forest in which the boys begin their journey. I absolutely loved the development of this character. There is also Xeres- the unexpected mentor for Marcus that just happens to be housed in Zyll's walking stick who can only be heard by its bearer. Then there is Jayson- the mysterious warrior that is much more than he seems. Some of the twists and turns do not surprise as much as they might others, but the read was fun and had me holding my breath on several occasions. I am looking forward to reading the second book in the series, The Last Enchanter.

I recommend The Rock of Ivanore to readers that enjoy well built worlds and characters in fantasy fiction. The middle school and young adult crowd can enjoy the book, as can adults. I think reluctant readers that need high action combined with solid characters could be tempted into reading this book, and hopefully the series as it continues on.

I received an e-ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion. This fact in no way affects my review except for the existence of the review itself. I received no compensation whatsoever for the review.

This book did not turn out to be what I expected! I expected to be reading a book that really focuses in on the fact that Mira has supernatural powers and while Contact does have some focus on the powers themselves, it also focuses on some of the problems caused by her powers and also on the events that happen around her as she tries to figure things out.

The plot of this novel was really intriguing and it held my interest the entire time. Since the beginning, there was an air of mystery surrounding a lot of things and that mysterious tone persists throughout the entire novel. The mystery of the source of Mira's powers and the miracle drug, Gaudium, is what really captivated me. The book was slow in the beginning as they introduce everything to the reader, but the book was like a snowball rolling down a hill. As time went on, things moved faster as Mira tries to uncover secrets.

The book takes place in an interesting time period. It's the near future. Mira's dad is in the running to become the first Hispanic senator and he was also the ex-CEO of a drug company that founded a miracle drug called Gaudium that can prevent depression, schizophrenia and other mental disorders. With the mention of this miracle drug, I thought in the beginning as I read it that it was about some distant future world, but it wasn't and that was really interesting to introduce this element into a modern universe.

I'm a crime show enthusiast and the plot unraveled a little bit like one of my favourite crime shows. And because I'm an enthusiast, some of the mystery reveals were a little predictable. That didn't detract from the adrenaline as I read the action in the book! There were some moments near the end where I was repeating, "Oh no! Oh noooooo!"

And the love interest in the book is adorable. I thought it was a little weird when he just went along with whatever Mira was doing though. Still adorable.

Mira is also Hispanic! This is the second book that I've ever read that had a Hispanic main character, the first being Matt from The House of the Scorpion. PoC characters ftw!

"But that was just a sliver of everything, one moment out of millions."

"But David doesn't stop. His hands slow, and the music transforms into something melancholy. It's beautiful, though, like someone's broken heart translated into a melody."

"The absence of sound is maddening."

I highly enjoyed the book and I could see the points in the end that set it up for a next book and those lines gave me a little anxiety too. If you read it, you'll know what I'm talking about. ;D

Now I was provided Contact by Laurisa White Reyes by NetGalley and Hallowed Ink Press to read and review. This is an ARC and is set to come out June 23rd. This is a story about a girl, Mira, who tries to kill herself. We join her after her second failed attempt. She isn't depressed and suicidal as you might initially think, no she has a deeper reason. Every time she comes into contact with someone, skin to skin, for even just a second she can see everything about the person. Their whole psyche loads into hers and it sucks. Not only does it hurt physically but she also feels so alone. And on top of all of that her father is ruining for political office and is being investigated for several deaths during testing for the miracle drug he helped pioneer.

I clicked on this book first because the cover caught my eye. A beautiful girl with an cracked glass background in cool colors and font clutching an old school record, I was curious to know more. This book was pretty interesting. It was set in modern day and I'd even say not a fantasy or sci-fi really. Sure the seeing peoples mind is a bit fantasy but its more a symptom and the rest of the story is about a mystery and a girls struggle to deal with her life and everything in it. She has family issues including a father who seems somewhat aloof and distant but whom she with her 'stunts' is clearly bringing more bad press to him. Oh and did I mention this drug also is mandated now because it cures, you guessed it, depression so when your daughter is still suicidal it raises questions.

Mira is a solid character for me that has a lot of things going on in her head and heart and doesn't know what she wants anymore. That's pretty much something everyone can relate to. Then we have David, a guy she meets in the most interesting way, who seems drawn to her and despite her rationalizations she is drawn to him. When you can't touch another person being around a boy that makes you want to touch is a conundrum. As her life starts to spiral David is there to help her search for answers and keep her sane while maybe even bring her through this.

The story itself as I mentioned is more of a mystery than a fantasy as Mira and David search for clues about what she is and just what really happened in those trials. It’s a dangerous game filled with excitement and intrigue so enjoy the ride. I give Contact 4 Stars. I enjoyed it and read through it pretty quickly, less than a day really. It has a little bit of everything in there for you and keep you going to the last page. Now it is currently only listed as a single book with nothing to indicate, that I have found, a start to a series but the book. It ends but and you are okay with the ending but there was the option to continue so if the story of Mira does continue I look forward to reading it. So check out Contact when it comes out soon on June 23rd.

I was hooked at chapter one. I was able to relate with Mira and that is what I like most in any story, when a reader can relate to the main character, or any character for that matter. It gives the story a whole knew perspective when you can.

The book opens with Mari in the hospital after her latest suicide attempt, this time she cut open her wrists. All she wants for it to stop, the memories, the feelings, the emotions, just everything and since she was immunized with the new drug, Gaudium is as only gotten worst.

Gaudium is the new miracle drug, the cure to mental illnesses and Autism. All sixteen year olds must receive the vaccine. I loved the idea behind a drug that eradicated mental illnesses, and how I wish this was real. One dose and your depression is cured, that would be amazing!

The story begins with in the middle of the conflict. Mari's father, the face and CEO of Rawley medical is being accused of running illegal drug tests along with his dead colleague, Gregory Stark. But when Mari's mother starts to question her husband the plot thickens. Fallen into a mysterious coma, she leaves Mari with many unanswered questions.

I liked how the author described what Mari felt when she touched someone, it made a better understanding of why she stayed so far away from people. But does the no touch rule apply to David as well?

I also really liked David's character. He was adorable, I just felt like he went along with what ever Mari said. Like think for yourself a bit dude, maybe she is going to end up almost getting herself killed, stop her!. I liked the romance too, it wasn't forced, it developed through out the book.

The beginning was slow, but that was to introduce everything. Once Mari's mother falls into the coma the book is one thrill ride. There are so many "oh shit!" moments that I lost count by the last page.

My favorite part was that Mari is Hispanic, I haven't read many books with a Hispanic main character. I think I need to look into books with characters of other races as well.

The book is open ended, meaning that Contact could be part of a series *crosses fingers* and we will get to see more of Mari's story. Until I know I am just going to have to wonder what happens next. *sigh*

Contact by Laurisa White Reyes

Mira has already tried to commit suicide two times, but she has failed both times. She shouldn't be depressed because of a drug that is supposed to prevent people from getting depression, but all that has managed to do was give her the power to see every part of people's lives, which might sound amazing but has been so overwhelming to Mira. She wants to escape it and to not have that power, but when her mother is put in a coma after she starts to question her father about a trial that he is part of, Mira is determined to find out what is going on.

This was a pretty good novel. It was exciting and I don't think that there was a dull moment throughout the whole time. Even though it is kind of normal for a main character to have powers and not like them, Reyes did a good job of making Mira's seem believable. Her power really is often more of a problem to her than a good thing and it has made her life a lot harder than it used to be.

Mira and the main characters were handled all right too, except their were weird moments. Mira seems to recover from the things that happen to her much too quickly. Her mother is in a coma for awhile and she barely thinks about it. I understand that no one wants to read about a character who does nothing, but I would have liked if she had more of a reaction to that and what happened later to her mother as well.

Her romance also was a bit annoying at times, because I would have rather read about the main plot. I wouldn't consider it bad enough to be a romantic tumor though.

There were some twists that I could predict but also some that were surprising.

This book did have flaws, but overall I still feel that it is an above average book and I am going to give it four out of five.

I got approved to read this book through netgalley. It sounded intriguing, to say the least. Mira sees people's whole life flash in her mind when she touches them. Their hopes, dreams, memories. She hates it so much, se tries to commit suicide twice. Her mom is the only person who seems to believe her and who is there for her. Her father is this big wig in this company who eradicates depression and mental disorders in teens. He also is running for governor. At times he seems so distant and cruel. When her mother falls into a coma, the only person she can turn to is David. David is so sweet and caring, with secrets of his own. It seems like all Mira wants to do, is live her life for the first time since her powers manifested. But instead, she gets wrapped up with an old affair of her father's and someone trying to kill her. dealing with her mother being in a coma is hard for her but seeing that her mother is still in there and having David helps. When she starts to get the feeling that her father may not be innocent and that her mothers coma may not be accidental, things start to get a little crazy.

I think what upset me is that she has this gift that no one believes. If I would have been in her shoes, I would have been trying to prove it. A lot got unanswered but not really with a cliffhanger. All in all, this book was pretty good. Not so quote worthy though. I don't think I highlighted not one. Definitely has potential to be a great series. I will be looking forward to the second one. Oh and I like the fact that her favorite candy is Abba Zabbas! We at this blog LOVE Abba Zabbas! Too bad they are non existant in the state of Mississippi, or anywhere in the south!

All in all I give this a 3 1/2 stars

I got a complimentary copy of this book via Netgalley as part of a blog tour.
I raced through this book it was a very quick read and I think that is due in large part to the very mysterious plot that kept me reading on wanting to find answers as bad as Mira did. I enjoyed the writing cause as I said the pace was fast and it stayed that way from start to finish, my only issue is that I wish there was a little bit more of an explanation on Mira's power of course it is touched on a talked about a little but I guess I was just wishing for more on the topic.I found this story and concept very neat and entertaining.
I found this was a lot more murder mystery than Urban Fantasy, my biggest reason being that a lot of the time I forgot Mira even had a power because they spent a lot of time talking about her Dad and his company issues and political career, now I am not complaining as it was all very interesting and dramatic, I'm just putting it out there.
There were a couple of things that I had kinda predicted and saw coming but there was a HUGE twist at the end that I did not see coming at all and I love when that happens, so props to the author on that one.
I really enjoyed Mira and I felt sorry for all she suffered but I was impressed with her growth throughout the story and David was great for her and her growth and I am very glad he was around, they were very cute together and I would like to see more of them I am not sure if this is a series or not but I really think it should be because with the way things ended I feel I have a few more questions and I would like to see Mira on a journey of self discovery and the search for answers, I want to say more but I don't want to spoil it for anyone one so all I will say is get your hands on this new book cause it's a thrill and a half.

Mira wants to die. She’s attempted suicide twice already and failed. Every time she comes in contact with another person, skin to skin, that person’s psyche uploads into hers. While her psychologist considers this a gift, for Mira it’s a curse from which she cannot escape.

Although her father claims it was an accident, thanks to her “condition” Mira knows the truth, but proving it just might get her killed.

It took me a bit to really get into this storyline. For the first part it was dragging very slowly, then gradually increased to nail biting by the end of the book. The story sort of just comes to a open ending, leaving room for more development or not. I'm not exactly sure about why, but it did leave me wanting more of a solid ending. This book is told from Mira’s point of view, so we got to travel through her self discovery first hand. For me I think it would be a rock solid 5 stars if the plot was expanded and detailed a touch more. There was plenty of details of Mira’s ability and her thoughts/feelings, but there was not much growth or details on the other characters. Except for perhaps Jordan. There are plenty of twists that I personally did not see coming, and was shocked to read. There are some disturbing parts as well. I am not sure if the teen market is the proper category, maybe that’s just me. I did like how David’s character was written in and merged with Mira’s. At times it was a little Bella/Edward. Overall Contact was a thrilling read that i enjoyed and would recommend.

I liked this book. It is a solid 3.5 stars.
This book started out good and got better. The setting in this book was pretty unique, well as unique as it can be with the fantasy genre. The book is set on an island that is at, what would be considered, a cold war with the mainland. On this island there are intersting inhabitants like Agorans(cat like humans), Grocs (big hairy monsters that can transform into humans), and cyclopses.
The basis of the book is, these young men must go on a quest to find their place in the vilage where the live. On this quest the must find the Rock of Ivanore. The central character of the book, Marcus, finds out the the rock is .
The characters were good and developed, but some of it was a bit too hard to believe; such as the change in attitudes so quickly from hating someone to becoming best friends. Sometimes the writing was not engaging and too unbelievable. It feels like the book is made for a younger audience, then there will be violent action scene that is more mature.
This is a good book for a quick adventure read. There is enough action and adventure to keep it entertaining, and light enough to make it an easy read. I f not for these minor problems I owuld have given it another half to one star.

I love fantasy books for young readers. They make for such light, easy and entertaining reads. The Rock of Ivanore by author Laurisa White Reyes was no exception.

This was a really fun and feel-good book to read. I read it in one night because I just wanted to find out how everything will turn out. The writing is simple and easy to follow. It had adventure and magic. It talked about friendship, love, honor, and loyalty, but it also had some dark moments. There have been reviews that the story, events and situations in the book aren't something new, and it's quite true but that didn't really bother me. It was still exciting and entertaining. This book would be great for young readers before they get on the hard core fantasy stuff. It's great for adult readers, too, if they just want a relatively quick and fun fantasy experience.

I received a review copy of this book at no cost and with no obligations. All opinions expressed here are my own.

When 16-year-old Mira touches another person she know everything they know, every thought they've ever had, every memory. Because of this curse, Mira has attempted suicide twice. Her father works for a company that created a miracle drug that ends mental illness, but killed volunteer test subjects. This is a really well written story with an intriguing plot. The pacing is really good and I really liked Mira. The story drew me in and held my interest. There is a sweet love interest named David which changes this story from paranormal to romantic. But of course, Mira can't touch him. Her abilities are a lot like the X-men, Rogue's in that respect. Mira's mother seems to know something about the mystery surrounding Mira's father and she seems to be attacked for her knowledge. This story then becomes a thriller/suspense as Mira tries to uncover the truth. 5 stars

This is the first book I have read by Laurisa White Reyes. She immediately grabbed my attention in Contact and once I started I couldn't put the story down. The imagination and detail that went into Contact is just beyond epic. I love that Laurisa brought diversity to the table in this story, as a mother with hispanic children its nice to be able to read stories they can somewhat relate to even if it is Urban Fantasy. I loved the characters, there was never a dull moment, there was always some type of drama unfolding and the suspense kept you on your toes. Can't wait to see what Laurisa brings us next!!

I was hooked from the beginning. Mira is such an interesting character. The pace of this book was just right for a ya novel. I found the idea
and the story unique and compelling. I found myself staying up late to read just a little more, and then a little more...I just wanted to find out what happened next. I would love to read a sequel, because I think Mira has more story to tell. The author has a new, fresh perspective. Her writing reflects an understanding of generational and cultural points of view contained in the story. As a fan of supernatural and action genres, I would recommend this ya novel, but there is so much more to this story.

Wow! Contact is such an explosive read. The way Mira explains how it feels when she touches someone, minus the physical pain was how I felt when I read Contact. Mira has the ability to see someone's memories and feelings just by touching them. It makes it hard for Mira to form relationships or even leave the house. Then she meets David. Sexy and cute David who begins to change Mira and show her that it's going to be okay. Then a series of events begun to unravel: betrayals, lies, secrets all make for a gripping read that will make you crave more. Another addictive YA read. I love Contact!

This is a paranormal story with a relatable character and what grabbed my attention was the beautiful cover. I went into it blindly and I was surprised by the themes that are tackled in it.

Mira is a complex character with a load on her shoulders that weights even more on her heart and mind. I liked the premise and I liked the mystery even better.

There were a few things that seemed not to fit, or to be out-of-character, some twists were predictable and the romance I could have done without, but the overall story was exciting and entertaining.

I really liked this book. It gripped me from the very beginning and kept me in its grasp til the very end. There were many twists and turns that made me not want to put down the story. I was on edge most of the second half of the story. The characters are well described and are very impressionable. I particularly was intrigued by her father and Jordan. I would high recommend people recommend people read this book.
