Translation

[close] We will be reading literary books by women from all over the world, whether originally written in English, or translated from another language. Join us to discover, and discuss the work of, many wonderful female authors. Everyone is welcome! We also have a Reading Challenge, the idea of which is to read one book from every country in the world over an extended period of time. The books can be either set in the country, or by an author born in that country. All of the authors must be female, or identify as female. You can, of course, choose to read any genre, fiction and non-fiction. There is no challenge deadline; simply read at your own pace. Books can be read in any order, and at any time.

[close] Welcome to the Roundtable Our passions include literary fiction, the classics, and serious non-fiction. In 2026 we are reading whatever we want to. The year long TBR reading challenge is ongoing, and the 4 month long, task based Book Challenge will be back in September. We also invite you to our list [of books, of course] making frenzy, or to add a discussion thread for your favorite author. The fine print: While we've all got our guilty pleasures -- vampires in love, celebrity gossip, books from our childhoods -- these books don't fit with the group's vision and purpose. It's strictly "quality" writing for an adult audience; for us this means literary fiction, the classics, serious non-fiction, literary science fiction, serious historical fiction, and classic mysteries. We like to see a diversity of opinions about what we read and a strong passion for books is a plus. However, we ask that our group members keep it about the books; be respectful of others and refrain from the ad hominem. Finally, you'll see that we're a private group and you'll need to "apply" to join us. This means that we'd like a word from you about why you'd like to join and what you're hoping to get from a group. It also helps if we can see your shelves and your profile. If your profile is set to private, you will not be approved for membership in the group.

[close] I started this group on idea that I had as a reader. I was constantly finding books in foreign languages that I am/was unable to read. I thought wouldn't it be great if I could ban together translators, authors and publishers together to possibly make English versions available to non-multilingual people? and also, books from other countries like the UK and Australia not available to those in the USA? I'm looking for translators who are dual-lingual, in their native tongue and in English. French, Italian, German, Dutch, Spanish, all apply here. My idea is to take the original book, translate it, publish it to Smashwords or somewhere similar, see how it gains an audience to an American publisher may pick it up and publish it, possibly give it a better translation. I'm not sure how all this work, legally, but it's worth taking a shot at! If this takes off, I'd like to start a website, to collaborate with reviewers, other bloggers, authors, publishers and freelance translators. We would work on translations, take requests, communicate with authors and publishers and review said books. if we cannot translate, I'd like to at least spread the knowledge of the books in hopes that they'd picked up by a USA publisher.
