Who doesn't want to lose themselves, to freeze time and dip into the comfort books? Who wants to use logic and apply craft criticism to something that's written to feel like a hug? Not me.
The only reason I dock a star is the pacing. Using the word timeline feels like an insult but what even was the timeline? ...more

My favorite bits were: the 3 Rays, 9 Stages of a Reader, May your self-help be helpful, Advocating for animal diversity in children's books, How to treat a writer’s block, the Murakami bingo. What irked me about it all is every reference in the book is such a cliché. I expected more than relatable. I wanted caustically sarcastic. I wanted unadulterated judgement. This hater wanted to be fed. I leave hungry.

The sketches contain this depth I assumed was impossible to create without words. I think if artists have something to say, the medium becomes irrelevant. The loneliness and imagination filling that empty space didn't need words.

Adi is looking for his wife, Iti. We get love, friendship, faith, mystery, and danger in one go. The setting is gorgeous and dangerous, and the characters just work with each other. Their fears and hopes are thoroughly relatable. It was a nice winter read for me.

The characters vibe with each other so well. The MMC and FMC are made for each other. It is so so cute. Their interactions have no personality switches... just one interaction blending into intimacy, which is entirely about them understanding each other. I loved the author not creating unnecessary conflicts to maintain the tension. The ending was extremely disappointing (and why I begrudgingly docked a star). The execution and not the outcome was the issue....more

Father Sebastian Urrutia Lacroix is a Chilean Jesuit priest, poet, critic, and teacher of Basque-French descent. The dude lived through a lot of things and dealt with illness and guilt (so much guilt). What I really liked is we get the deathbed confession that counts: what is the meaning of life (for people who choose words as their tools/weapons).
I put literature on this...pedestal. Then when it comes to living via the blahs one blabs, I choose betrayal. Like Urrutia, I wasted my youth on trivia (as civilization crumbles).

I liked the plot of Bride and the pairing of Mate. I also have a lot of petty complaints about the book, but then that epilogue where boring becomes the most interesting thing in the world got me good. Complaints rescinded. ::shrugs::

I was seriously annoyed, and I could not stop thinking about what I’d read. I think that is why I enjoyed reading the book. It made me think about a lot of things to the point of slipping into a reading slump and an introspective high.
I have docked a star for the size of this book. So much of it was not necessary. The sentences are too beautiful to cut... but they could have been cut.
The plot exists. The characters are trying to exist. The writing is excellent. The paisa and time weirdly vasools. ...more
