This series opener holds such promise and both presents a full story while leaving enough open that I cannot wait to read the rest. In fact, I think that's this book's biggest problem -- how long I have to freaking wait for the next ones! ...more

FantI think we officially needs word for fantasy that is the opposite of grim dark - fantasy that leaves you breathless and hopeful and full of life. Fantasy that explores the dark parts of the world but convinces you that goodness can prevail. And when we come up with a name for that kind of fantasy, let's shelve this one there right next to The Goblin Emperor and let's make them both best sellers so many more writers start crafting books like these. I adored it....more

I think these are perfectly fine reads, but still nothing really special has jumped out at me. I won't be banging down my bookstore's door to get the next one, but if I'm feeling like some paranormal YA series reads, I'll probably keep going in the series. Just pretty average all around....more

Part magical realism, part mystery, part commentary on small towns and authors and art -- and entirely indecipherable. I never wanted to stop reading or lost interest, but also left the experience feeling more like, "what just happened" than "holy crap, that was amazing." I have a Feeling this will be one that doesn't leave me anytime soon....more
