This is the last book I'm going to write for the Poisoner of Kingfountain series and it's a story I originally told in a paragraph while writing The Queen's Poisoner. Needless to say, there's a lot more involved than just a paragraph in this novel. I loved how I was able to connect so many of the dots in the Kingfountain universe and provide what really happened. Even though you may know what happens, you don't know everything that happened!
As a bonus, the print version of this book also includes the final story, Poisoner's Revenge. I hope you enjoy this last adventure of Ankarette. Many early readers wanted to re-start Queen's Poisoner again after finishing this. You may want to as well! ...more

It had some of the same wonderful vibe as Robin Hobb's Farseer books, but the magic ships have a different kind of enchantment. The dual protagonists, Mary Firth and Sam Rosser, both are an integral part of the story. It has good pirates, bad pirates, pirate hunters, and a forbidding Navy and lots of ports with different cultures. The magic system in this is first rate, with wielders you can summon storms, track people they've touched, and manipulate emotions. I'm ready for book 2, which comes out soon! He usually does this through the narrative technique of following key players in all the fields, from the nascent NYPD bomb squad to the originator of the Nobel prizes. This book was highly informative, vastly entertaining, and gave me some brilliant villain motives I might have to consider for my own books. Well done!...more

But when the idea came to do another adventure with Ankarette, showing how she began to earn her reputation as a fearless poisoner, I couldn't wait to get started. This is one of the fastest books I have written and it comes on the heels of my new thriller series (The Dresden Codex) and it probably shows. It is very fast-paced and has tie-ins to things that will be familiar. But I also wrote it as a stand-alone story so that even someone unfamiliar with Kingfountain would be able to understand it. I'm so glad it is finally out and available to read! Ankarette remains a fan favorite and I hope this book will entice new fans and please those who already love her.

It has everything I look for in a story, strong and fascinating characters to root for, creative world building, suspense, a mysterious villain, and just enough romance to keep me wanting more. I've known Charlie for years, admired all her work, and was thrilled to get an advanced copy of Keeper of Enchanted Rooms. This is Charlie at her best--intriguing mystery, creative magic systems, with plenty of romance to keep me turning the pages. I really love the villain of the story and how much she developed him, which heightened the tension and increased the danger lurking beneath the strange (and sometimes terrifying) magic at Whimbrel house. I think it's my favorite relationship story too. Hulda and Merritt have amazing tension which just squeezes you throughout. It was a delightful read--twice--and that's rare for me to read a book twice. So glad we get a sequel!...more
