A curious novel that I found engrossing all the same. If you're looking for character development, it's not really here -- but an alarming situation with various ramifications, attention to political leaders and how they handle it; various animals, both household and in the wild; and certain characters. The sea is naturally a main character as is the country of Holland, its longstanding relationship to the sea... With most of its citizens leaving for Germany and elsewhere, the novel seems a paean of sorts to Holland, its particularities, including the Dutch language, soon to be gone. Sea Now breaks most novelistic conventions it seems, and yet it's affecting all the same, in part due to the poetry of Meijer's approach but also to the imaginative treatment of a perhaps very real impending disaster.
