I love that the book is from a womens perspective, taken in a serious light. This is something seriously missing from the science fiction genre. Another thing that is too often missing, is the "what's it all about" questions. This book tackles the big questions, and does not ever take a lowest common denominator approach to the matters. The story is believable and entertaining, gripping and full of heart. Ellie is a three dimensional character and you can relate to her, truly. The ending is perfect. The "aliens?" are done in such a new and inventive way, if only every writer could be so original. Plus the plausibility of the whole scenario and science of it, gives the book true heft. From the chapters introduction quotes, to the underlying philosophy, Sagan really gives a beautiful, brilliant, touching book. I can't recommend this book enough. Now I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you ever want a read that leaves you feeling more complete, then Contact is your book.
And once you've read the book, do yourself a favor and get the audiobook version, read by Laurel Lefkow, not Jodie Foster. Jodie is a brilliant actress, but Laurel is an amazing and talented narrator. She gives the perfect mood and atmosphere for this book.
