It pains me to say this (and I may lose my "guy" cred), but I'm a big fan of the urban-fantasy sub-genre. While I tend to lean more towards male protagonists (i.e. Butcher's Dresdan Files and Green's Nightside series), I still love me a good, tough female protagonist. That being said, I was hesitant to pick this one up because of the abysmal Harlequin like cover. In my opinion, many of the current crop of urban-fantasy covers look like they belong in the romance section. Why do I even know what Harlequin is? Anyway, that being said, I'm glad I picked this one up. I thought the main character of Moon Called , Mercedes Thompson, is one of the more refreshing female characters I have come across in a long time. Her banter with the other werewolves is priceless, and writing good dialogue has always been Patricia Briggs strong point.
This is the story of werewolves, vampires and fae, and the struggle they find living in a modern world that has no place for them. This is the story of a young coyote named Mercy who lives among a male dominated werewolf pack, which views all women as being weak. Basically, this is all about struggle, loyalty, honor, friendship, love and fixing cars.
Moon Called is an inventive and fun read in a genre that is saturated with sameness. Much better than any current Anita Blake catastrophe, I happily recommend this one.

Natalie Your review makes me laugh but I totally have to agree on the latest urban fantasy books having lame covers. You should try the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. It's fantastic, just rip off the stupid cover before you read it. It's one of those cases where you just can't judge a book by it's cover, cause you totally wouldn't read it. Tough bad ass guys.

Belinda I definitely agree about the cover. I read this in PDF and when I saw the cover later it was like "eh? that's not Mercy!"

Azurise Just got off the Anita Blake train, and I agree with you, this is definitely a breath of fresh air.

Angela Loved this series myself! Read all Anita Blake books so far and could do without the porno scenes in them. I think that's one of the many things that made this series one of my favs. She didn't put that garbage in it.

Linda I like you I really like you ( Sally Fields quote at the Oscars). It's delightful to see a man who is not afraid to give his opinion in this female dominated area. Loved your review. You street cred is safe, no worries!

Lindsay Simms Dear Past!Joshua,
Don't worry, liking awesome female characters who are realistic, smart, and able to take care of themselves (physically and emotionally, doesn't take away your Guy Cred. In fact, it makes you significantly more likely to be placed into the "Pretty Cool Guy" category, as opposed to the "Awful Guy to Stay Away From" category. A+ for that.

Plus, urban fantasy is awesome and anyone who disagrees solely because most main characters are heroines, not heroes, needs to start living in the real world and get their hands out of their own pants. (That is significantly less crude than my original thought, but I figured is class it up since we're strangers.)

I'm about 10% into Moon Called, and am really enjoying it so far. I just came off a real bad male-lead story with zero likable or realistic female characters, so that may be contributing to my excitement so far, but it seems like a genuinely good book, biases aside.

Krista "Abysmal Harlequin-like cover" LOL. So true! Nicely put

Meg (queer_book_recs) You might also like the Sensor series.

Fraser Weir The thing I loved about Anita Blake was her work... I could even get behind the Federal stuff. But now that'd it's 1% re-animating, 19% police and 80% orgy I just can't drag myself through another one... I don't even think I've read the last 1 or 2. Mercy Thompson on the other hand is a hero I still want to read. Plus I can audio book them without having to check everyone's ID'S. Keep them coming and please don't change your winning formula.

Brant I like the covers. Are we talking about the same ones?

Natalia You really should read the Kate Daniels serie if you like the genre

Joe Picked this up based on your review. I had read the Anita Blake series, but it grew tiresome and like you I love a great female protagonist and Mercy sounds like a woman right up my alley. Great review.

Chelsea Callahan Im just gonna leave this here. If you liked a female protag in this you might like my book. Eyes of The Grave. I just self published. https://www.amazon.com/dp/1702808831

Kerri Completely agree about the covers of urban fantasy novels! It's frustrating as I feel like this may turn off potential readers.

Brent Not sure why it “pains” you to admit an enjoyment of urban fantasy. It’s a great genre with a good 40+ year history (inc. Terri Windling’s Borderland, Charles De Lint, and Megan Lindholm). And most of the covers are great.

I suspect some of the “issue” is differentiating between urban fantasy and the UF-Romance hybrid called Paranormal Romance (PNR). UF tends to be a well mixed genre in terms of author gender, while PNR tends to be female dominated (both due to the publishers’ assumed audiences). Of course, the line between the two is blurry. Example: Ilona of Ilona Andrews calls their work PNR, while I’d call it UF. The Anita Blake series began UF, I think, but swiftly became PNR. I would say the divide depends on the ratio of romance to non-romance elements.

Hali's Book Addiction I am currently reading this and enjoying it. I would recommend you read the Kate Daniels Books. She is a riot, and those books rock.

Kels “Guy cred” LOL this review is accurately 10 years old

Anne P Fantastic review, Joshua!

Brandy Slifer Hey! I know it's been like 16 years since you checked this out, but I just stumbled across it on Audible. If you enjoyed it, I think you'd really love Demon Days and the Vampire Night series — they've got some fun banter, a little bit of spice for the ladies, and a great mix overall. Plus, there's that awesome UF vibe, of course! Not sure if you're still on Goodreads, but I just thought I'd recommend them. Hope you're doing well!
