Proof that I still like idea-driven SF, I found this book to be astoundingly mind-expanding. I loved the hard-SF aspects, and the slight bending of physical laws to create the scenario. As I was reading it, I was reminded of a movie I saw a few years back that had a similar premise of a ship on an unplanned journey through deep space. I found that movie quite boring, and at points annoying, but this book delivered the concepts in a way I liked. Yeah, the characters are not all very likable, but then there's no reason that the elite chosen for such a journey would be. The sense of isolation and despair come through clearly, and the breakdown of social norms made sense as well.
