The first time I read it, I was enthralled with the manner in which Dean grounds the action in academia while spinning what turns out to be a fairly literate fantasy tale. The second time I read it, the "academic" references felt more like name-dropping at an English department cocktail party, and the fantasy element was less compelling because I was less interested in the genre. In college I'd have given this four stars. Now I'd give it two. So I've split the difference above.
