Be patient with this for the first part. The "cliquey" attitude and superficial dialogue between the kindergarten mothers may not seem like your cup of tea. Moriarty is just laying the foundation for the plot line. What I found more challenging was the inserts of opinions of some of the secondary characters in-between the chapters, comments relating to some crime that takes place further on in the story line. It seems disruptive at times, and has one wondering what is coming up. We don't know the plot line or the characters well enough at that point, so sticking with it can be challenging. I'm a Moriarty fan and have read several of her novels, all different from each other in subject matter, but all conveying the wonderful talent she has of realistically fleshing out her characters, flaws and all, and with some wit and humor thrown in even if the plot line is a serious or distressing one.
You'll soon find yourself invested in this novel and caring about what happens to the characters, looking forward to picking up the novel each chance you get. I ended up thoroughly enjoying it, especially the bonding of the female characters, even though I don't usually like this type of subject matter. Recommended for lovers of women's fiction who have had enough of the romantic, predictable novels out there. Moriarty always has a few surprises for us.
