The good: It's never too late to repair the ruins of a relationship. It's never too late to start again.
The questionable: That 2 grown women whose mother has been cold to them, never demonstrating love their entire lives can turn out unscathed. Meredith has this wonderful relationship with her two daughters yet her own mom was practically Mommy Dearest. And what kind of father could watch his two little girls continually emotionally abused by their mother without insisting she gets counseling? The author also suggests that a woman can never really know herself unless she know her mother's story. This bothered me. It seemed like a slap in the face to adopted children, or those who grew up without knowing their mother.
The bad: The whole "Mom can't see color" conundrum. But wait, this is foreshadowing because well, she used to be able to see color.
The audio-taping (Mom's story) was excruciating. We get it, they were cold, hungry and miserable, could that not have been summed up in a page or two? The most impossible turn of events at the end of the book made me roll my eyes well before I could have even considered wiping them. (view spoiler)
