To Kill a Mockingbird

I first read this book when I was young and really related to the precoscious Scout and her childhood antics. Atticus was a role model, but somewhat distant to me.
Now that I am a parent, Atticus stood out. His desire to do right by his kids, his feelings of inadequacy, his constancy and faithfulness to his (counter-cultural) values were an inspiration to me.
What makes this book so brilliant is that it communicates, challenges and shapes the thinking of the reader on many levels simultaneously. Themes of innocence, racism, prejudice, life and death, defining civilization, wrestling with democracy, teaching true manliness, examining true femininity, justice, the jury system, and the love of family.
I highly recommend this book.
For another wonderful novel set in the south, check out:
Cold Sassy Tree, Burns, 1984
