A novel of such depth and clarity, The Underground Railroad is a book that stays with the reader. His prose is masterly: spare yet so evocative. Readers seeking an unsparing picture of the evils of multi-generational U.S. slavery will find it in this book. They will also find an unsentimental and elemental portrait of human endurance.
This is a book that educates the willing through an artistry with words that can only be admired and applauded. As I read, in these dark days before President Obama leaves office and knowing that he read and admires this book, I could only think that he and we draw strength from this novel that teaches us once again that the "arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."
Thank you, Mr. Whitehead, for your book.
