I don't think I can actually write down how much I enjoyed reading this novel. I had my doubts before I started reading as the acceptance and recommendations of this book seem to vary considerably. Some hate it, some love it. Being an avid Lehane fan, I felt it was high time I started reading for myself. I was not disappointed. What an outstanding novel! Very fine writing indeed.

At times I felt like I was walking around in historic Boston myself, seeing things the way that Danny is seeing it. Danny's character is an excellent example of a man ahead of his time who is willing to put the things he's learned into question time and again and let his heart make the decision. His relationship with Nora, his relationship with Luther and the way he deals with those around him. Righteous and heartfelt.

The story is heavily soaked in Boston history and it gives it an awesome backdrop of a man who stands in the middle of the Boston Police strike. Don't worry about the length of the novel, I am confident it will keep you enthralled until the last page.
