Black: The Birth of Evil (The Circle, #1)

This falls into my category of Brilliant Idea Executed Poorly. I have always had wicked vivid dreams, so novels about dreamscapes, dreams vs reality, dreams portending the future, etc, fascinate me. "Black" intrigued me enough that I forced myself to read six or seven chapters, then I was so irritated that I ranted about it to my poor husband for 20-30 minutes.
What didn't I like? Characters who are at once both ridiculously unbelievable AND flat (our protagonist can't focus long enough to maintain a steady job, but is a karate prodigy. He's dependable enough to financially support his mother & nurse sister, but blew tens of thousands of dollars smuggling crocodile skins in exotic Asian statues rather than paying off the NY Mob loan shark. The apt he shares with his sister is full of said statuary and masks because his import/export business didn't work out. Hey pal, I have one word for you: Ebay. Frickin' idiot). The action reads like a poorly designed video game, the dialogue is clunky and unnatural, and the fantasy/future reality is like a bad episode of He-Man & the Masters of the Universe. When the giant white bats started talking like Jewish grannies at the corner deli, I had to either return the book or be put on suicide watch.

Just my thought *spoilers* this is my favourite book EVER. If you end up reading the rest of the circle, you would find out that Thomas goes back into the past with the hope of saving his child. Maybe his skills from the future clicked a button in his head somewhere that said, hey, i know how to do this! So maybe it just came slightly more naturally because he did technically know how to do karate. This is just my thought. I respect your opinion on the book.ps, i think the characters are anything but flat.
I'm glad you didn't keep reading because it just gets worse and worse! My husband had to hear about it multiple times because I forced myself to read all four books.
This is a great book. You haters dont have to read it i you don't want, but let other people enjoy what truly is a great book:)
THANK YOU! I always hear rave reviews about this series, but it drove me batty! My son wanted me to read it, and I really Gabe of
gave it the old college go, even switching to audiobook in hopes of increased palatability, but nope. Still just super annoyed.
I'm currently suffering through this book. I'm not one to let a book go unfinished and since my husband speaks so highly of the whole series, I figured that I could swallow my annoyance and keep reading. I seriously can't stand the dialog. Hope the other books are better.
I started it... the person they chose to narrate the audio book (Chris Fabry) is HORRIBLE!!!! He runs all the sentences together and talks like he's in a race to finish... don't think I will continue with this one... it's just too silly... js
I am listening to the audibook and concur about the reader. Sometimes it is like he is reading a run on sentence but with 2 different characters talking.
Abeg o u will just b leaving Ted dekker 4 me after all nobody forced u 2 read it in d first place . The guy z good and so far I love the book. Dunno y pole find pleasure in spoiling Ida poles minds
I think the book brings up amazing ideas and topics for discussion. There is so much more to the book than just the plot so you will need to go further than 7 chapters to really understand what the author is trying to put across. Rhetorically, I think the book is excellent and goes so much deeper than the average reader could possibly understand
I am listening to the unabridged audio book and I have listened to part of Black and Green in the past and the book is awesome. I'm almost done with Black. I plan to listen to the rest as soon as I can!
So interesting to read reviews so opposite; I have to say, I have felt both about this book! I am rereading it and listening to it also. Ultimately it's message is amazing. But I have also felt annoyed by some of the story. Such is life and why it actually works out even better. I returned to this book because my father was having vivid dreams and I recommended he read the book.
I'm just saying you don't have to like the book, but...... you don't have to hate on it either. This is a great series, and if you read the whole series, it comes together! Please don't hate this book. Ted Dekker is an amazing Christain author, and this series is worth it.
Similar reaction. Author was so intent on pounding home his version and interpretation of Christianity that story-telling took a back seat. I don’t enjoy being preached to (yes, I AM Christian) by a Sci-fi book/fantasy book. This was not a clever allegory or use of symbolism; it’s straight up pushing very specific viewpoints. Not entertaining. I was initially quite interested in the concept and story ideas, but the author quickly beat that interest out of me.
Agree with all this. I listened to 6 hours and just had to stop. The reader is horrible and I was so very bored. I can’t understand the hype.
