Fatemarked (The Fatemarked Epic, #1)

I'm a voracious reader and I hate to slow down long enough to write a review, because as soon as I am done with one book, I like to head off to my next adventure. Once in a while, however, I force myself to stop and write a review out of respect for the author and in homage to the hard work involved in writing a book.
Fatemarked is such a book. One that forced me to slow down twice---first, during the process of reading it (it was so delicious, I wanted to savor it) and now that I'm done and already on to my next book, I felt compelled to go back and give David Estes his due.
I think you have to have a fairly big ego to write epic fantasies. It's like choosing to tackle the biggest mountain. I don't know if it can be done by those who are faint of heart.
Fatemarked has all of the necessary ingredients for a truly great story. Interesting, detailed world-building. Fantastic, strong characters. A hint of humor to lighten up the mood of death and destruction. An engaging plot that keeps you guessing. Overarching themes of courage, destiny, love, leadership, revenge, loyalty and more. Ancient prophecies, hidden powers, dragons, kings and queens, and yet at heart, a story about people and all the complexities of surviving difficult times and finding the strength to persevere. Seriously, what's not to love?
I like that the author is so inclusive without being preachy. In this story, you'll find chubby girls, bisexual boys, people of all skin colors, and none of it feels forced or "trendy." It is diversity at its best.
I highly recommend this book. If you love good stories, this book is for you.
Truthfully, though, I'm not rushing out to buy the second book just yet. Because I already know I'm going to be sad to leave this world at the series' end. And so, I'm taking my time and savoring the ride, knowing that the journey will be worth it.
