The Hate U Give is the book which has a story about a black girl named Starr Carter. She has a lot of unique environment and experience, basically she has two version of Starr - Starr at the Garden Heights, kind of like ghetto or the black community, and Starr at the Williamson, the white-private school. The main story of this book is going along the case which is happened just in front of her two eyes. One of the Starr's best friend, Khalil got shot by the white police, One-Fifteen (It's his badge number that Starr remembers so she called the cop with it. ). At first, she's afraid of being exposed in the public as the only witness at that night. But along the story is processed, we can find the girl who becomes REALLY brave and active to reveal the the truth of that tragedy.
In this book (story), there are a lot of discrimination not only about the color of the skin but also about the diverse topics. For example, the story is related about the wealth discrimination by the relationships between Starr and her friends in Williamson, and also about the nationality discrimination which one of the Starr's best friend in Williamson, the Chinese Maya's experiences, etc...
I think it's a good point that the book makes us think a lot and think at the various perspective.
For me, it's not that easy to read because there are pretty much slang or the cultural expressions. And English is not my mother tongue so that I have a little obstacles with understanding the context.
BUT, although I had those hard conditions, I extremely enjoyed it! Like the changes of Starr's mind and feelings or the process that Starr grows up, there were a lot of things to take care about while I'm reading the book. Also, I like the way that Starr expresses the situation or, whatever. Sometimes it's pure and sometimes it's honest that make me felt like really 16 years old girl is telling me her own story. I mentioned the obstacles that I had, and unexpectedly, that obstacles became the interesting subjects of further investigations so that the obstacles are helped my extra study, also. I heard that there is a movie of The Hate U Give was released already this year. So, If you are not interrested in reading the book, I recommend you to watch that movie, too.
