This was one of the hardest books to read that I’ve ever read. It has trigger warnings for pretty much any awful thing you can imagine like: violent rape, sexual assault, suicide, graphic violence, murder, torture, and at times I honestly wasn’t sure if I could stomach any more of it. But I was captivated by this writing and I couldn’t stop reading this book, I had to figure out how it would end.
This is my first book from Karin Slaughter and it definitely won’t be my last, though it may be a while before I pick up another because my heart hurts right now. It mainly follows two sisters Claire and Lydia who haven’t spoken in years, but when Claire’s husband is murdered, their horrible past comes back to them.
This book was incredibly hard to read, and it made me cringe so many times. I don’t think I’ve ever read torture like this and the way it was described literally made my stomach roll. I would not recommend this book to just anyone, because this shit is super fucked up. But this story really drew me in. It is an edge-of-your-seat thriller from page 100 till the end. And by the ending I was literally bawling my eyes out for this family. I don’t think a thriller has ever made me cry until this one. After finishing this book I feel emotionally drained.

This book made me want to read everything by Karin Slaughter. Disturbing but compelling.

Was on a Karin Slaughter binge when I stumbled into this book, and it was the last one I read because it was so painful (and such a good book). I have a couple more on my shelves, and maybe I'll work up the courage to read them now.
This book is giving me a Gothika (Halle Berry film) sorta vibe, just a little. Excellent movie but I hope this doesn't turn out to be the case for this particular story as I am enjoying it and my first taste of KS hopefully not the last. I'm happy you liked it and thanks for the review.
Am so happy to hear that you liked this book, try reading her other book titled “The Good Daughter”. :D
I LOVED LOVED LOVED LOVEDDDDDD THIS THRILLER. THe Good Daughter is equally intense and bloody so maybe take a brearther before you start it:)
I'm scared by the "I honestly wasn't sure if I could stomach any more of it" comment (I doubt that I could, if you couldn't), but I still want to pick it up at some point. I call this mental self-torture, I guess.
Agree with all you said. My first of hers as well. I think the violence took away from a great story. Seems like older writers had a way of implying situations but left more to your imagination. This was pretty intense.
i dont think ive ever cried after finishing a book like i did with this one. very well written but emotionally draining as you said.
I agree. I did like the way she put things so indelicately, but the graphic depiction of the murders made me want to throw up.
Your list of TWs....say less. And you dont know an incredibly hard to read book if you haven't read The Groomer by Jon Anthen.
