Starsong - 4 stars
A thoughtful story with beautiful writing, which felt like it could be the first chapter of a full length novel.
Afterbirth - 4 stars
People will see what they want to see.
The Heart in Our Hands - 4.25 stars
I loved the power in this one.
Death in the Sawtooths - 3.5 stars
This one was okay, but I found it a bit boring.
The Truth About Queenie - 2.75 stars
The messages in this one were important, but the witchy aspect wasn't done well.
The Moonapple Menagerie - 2 stars
This one has my favorite title, but I was very disappointed. The plot felt cliche and the characters and world weren't fleshed out enough.
The Legend of Stone Mary - 3 stars
This one had a spooky vibe, but I'm not sure what the point was.
The One Who Stayed - 3.5 stars
I liked the concept, but the execution wasn't for me.
Divine are the Stars - 2.75 stars
It was okay, but nothing particularly interesting.
Daughters of Baba Yaga - 3.75 stars
I liked this one; it had almost the right amount of creepy.
The Well Witch - 2.75 stars
I really liked the beginning, but wasn't a fan of how the plot progressed.
Beware of Girls with Crooked Mouths - 3.5 stars
The concept was fascinating and I loved the story, but it felt unfinished. I do like that this is set in a world where same-sex marriages are normal.
Love Spell - 4 stars
Anna Marie McLemore was the only author I recognized in this anthology, and I'm glad they didn't disappoint me.
The Gherin Girls - 4.5 stars
I loved how strong the bond was between the three sisters and how they explained to Rosie that the abuse is never the fault of the victim, and how brave she was to walk away.
Why They Watch Us Burn - 5 stars
"I am a wolf, and wolves survive."
"Perhaps my crime was simply the misfortune of being a female in public."
This was definitely my favorite short story. I love how strong the girls are, even as society casts them as liars and witches just for telling the truth.
