it was ok

DNF. I want you to know it's okay to not finish a book. Even if you're 22 hours in to a 28 hour book. Even if the book has over 4 stars on Goodreads. Even if this is the Great American Novel. Not every book is for you. And those six hours I saved allowed me to read something good instead. I already wasted enough time.

message 1: by Shirley (new)

Shirley Spangle I suffered through 162 pages of this book and just couldn't take any more. There was not 1 character that cared about even a little bit.

message 2: by Geraldine (new)

Geraldine Fitzgerald Thank goodness that I’m not alone! Still ploughing ahead but needed to find out if I was missing something. Normally love Franzen but your comments are spot on!

message 3: by Elly (new) - rated it 1 star

Elly Bee I’m about 60 pages in and came here to read reviews. I’m struggling to find a reason to keep reading.

Stop now, IMHO there is no reason to continue, it doesn't get any better.

message 5: by MD (new) - rated it 4 stars

MD I wish I had done the same. It was awful

message 6: by Camille (new)

Camille Chapman I can’t read Frazen. I’ve tried several of his books and they just don’t do it for me. I won’t read another no matter the good reviews.

Danielle I usually like Franzen but this one is a slog through some unlikable and uninteresting characters that I find myself wondering why I should care about them at all.

message 8: by Cmackin101 (new) - added it

Cmackin101 I was 17 in 1971. This is not what it felt like. At all.

Will Fang I'm 5 chapters in and finding it to be a real slog. I loved The Corrections and several of Franzen's other works. I saw the glowing reviews for this one and figured I must be missing something. Glad to see I'm not the only one.

message 10: by Rosy (new) - rated it 1 star

Rosy Agreed! I’ve never read a book where I’ve disliked every single character. They are awful. Maybe that’s the point. This was my first and last time reading Franzen.

message 11: by Ron (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ron Brown I am with you on this. I got to page 105.

message 12: by Davi (new) - rated it 1 star

Davi Kladakis I normally enjoy Franzen. I loved Purity. But OMG these characters are like petulant children throwing tantrums. I am 240 pages in and I am probably going to DNF

Mandy Codispoti I wish I had read this BEFORE I finished the book..... UGH. It was a STRUGGLE.

Brooke Tubbs I finished it because I just can’t not! But not good.

message 15: by Kara (new) - rated it 1 star

Kara This novel reminded me how much I dislike Franzen.

Anita Am almost ready to stop reading. But as you said, even with all the stars, I seem to be missing something.

message 17: by Tracy (new) - added it

Tracy Garber Solidarity. I’m cutting my losses.

Shellie15 I'm throwing in the towel at page 68...I loved The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen...but I can't get into this 😮‍💨

message 19: by Jo (new) - rated it 1 star

Jo I needed to read this review! Got to p283 but can’t go on. Glad I’m not alone

message 20: by Lori (new) - rated it 2 stars

Lori So glad to know others felt like I did about this book. I wish I hadn’t finished it. Kept thinking, “it’s got to get better.” But alas, it did not.

donna Tough read. I kept waiting to find a character that I liked. Didn’t happen. Not one.

message 22: by Sean (new) - rated it 3 stars

Sean Hunt I got to about page 400 and was so bored by one storyline that just dragged on and on. It had some good moments tho, in particular Marion's life story but wasn't enough for me to see it through.

message 23: by Jo (new) - rated it 4 stars

Jo Reading and listening. Undoubtedly good writing but not engaged yet

message 24: by LeeAnn Carlen (new)

LeeAnn Carlen I have tried SO HARD to finish this one and just came to Good Reads to remove it from my “currently reading” and saw this review. Thank you for validating my being a “quitter” on this one, haha

message 25: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Moloney I keep telling myself I WILL finish this book. But now it feels like homework in high school English class when you had to read the book but didn't enjoy it. I'm going to donate this book and perhaps someone else will truly enjoy it. Now I'm off to pick up another from my shelf that I hope to get completely immersed in.

Anita I pushed through only because I have liked other books by Franzen. It's not so much that the characters were unlikeable, although they were; they were so boring. It will be awhile before I pick up another Franzen book.

Kevin I love this book and was was riveted by the characters, but if a book isn’t doing it for you…there’s almost nothing wrong with dropping it.

message 28: by Matt (new) - added it

Matt Walker It’s definitely okay to not finish a book, but please don’t post a review or a rating if you haven’t finished the book.

Gerneylee Carter I am having trouble so skipping great portions which doesn't seem to actually matter. I am curious where (and then why) he is going with this pedestrian story with some really deep teenagers. Where does anyone find such deep teens?

message 30: by Toini (new) - added it

Toini Williams Didn’t read book yet but, thankfully, I have known many deep teens.

message 31: by Nicholas (new) - added it

Nicholas I actually think you need to be in your middle age to enjoy a book like this. If I were to read this in my early 20s I would most likely have hated it.

message 32: by Eli (new) - added it

Eli This is how I felt about 1Q84 and "My Struggle" by Knausgaard
