What worked:
Back to the Future, Doctor Who, Star Trek, I think it's safe to say that I LOVE Science Fiction and one aspect of it in particular. I don't know what it is about time travel but I just can't get enough! I've seen a few people comparing Time Between Us to The Time Traveller's Wife and I can see why: the guy travels through time and it's a love story. But for me, that's where the similarities end.
Bennett is very different from my beloved Henry. He can control his ability and their personalities are at complete opposite ends of the scale. Bennett blows hot and cold so much that I got whiplash. Jasprit can vouch for the fact that I genuinely thought Moody Bennett and Flirty Bennett were two different people! I got whiplash with the boy changing his mind every two seconds. No wonder Anna had no idea what was going on with him. Poor lass. However, the thing that kept me rooting for this pair is that he's fully prepared to miss out on his own future to spend time in the past with Anna
With time travel, Tamara Ireland Stone had the scope to weave her plot in on itself until the reader was wrapped up in a web of deceit and she took full advantage of that. I had no idea what to expect from one minute to the next which kept me turning the pages. If you think you can "call it" HAHA think again, my friend...
And what is it with protagonists called Anna? These girls have some major guts and they're not up for having the wool pulled over their eyes. On more than one occasion, Bennett tries to smile his way back into her good books but she wasn't standing for that *finger snap* and Anna demanded an explanation until he finally gave up the goods.
Our trusty sidekick, Emma, seems to be a bit of a stereotypical Brit but she absolutely cracked me up with her one liners. She really grounded Anna when things got a bit overwhelming and those darker moments lightened right up.
What irked: Anna seemed to accept the time travel excuse a bit too eagerly, I was expecting more resistance or shock. And with the writing style, I felt that there was a bit too much telling and not enough showing for me. I wanted to be on the edge of my seat in the scary moments and I wanted my breath to catch with the swoons. But I didn't because Anna was telling me that's what was happening to her so she stole all of the feels which disconnected me from Time Between Us :( There's also a secondary character called Danielle that served as an extra cast member for me. Yes her banter with Emma was really funny but I didn't know anything about the girl which frustrated this bookworm.
