OK, it reads fast and it is entertaining. But I really do not buy the premise that the protagonist would give himself up in a occult way to put a complicated plan in play. Granted without that conceit we would have no story. But if you are going to start a complex mechanism going you had better be sure that no gremlins can spoil it and this is full of gremlins. And then the ending! The whole plot depended on the loyalty of a character that after giving up most of the money and aiding the main character faithfully decides to abscond with the remainder. WTF?

I simply could not understand why Grisham would make Eva abscond. I mean, if she HAD to leave, she should have left when she had the 90+mil. Unless she had some sympathy and wanted him to be free before she ran for it..but then that is just bad writing...it's almost as if Grisham got bored and just wrote whatever came to his mind.

I think that her fathers life put at risk was the final straw. This probably made her realise "screw this guy" and just up and go. Possibly.
Exactly! I really don't believe that's what happened at all. I think she was kidnapped by the same people, pissed off that she tricked them, plus she still knew where all the money was.
