This book was such a mixed bag! The first 200 pages are so slow. Almost painfully slow. The last half is an absolutely beautiful story. It almost feels like you are reading 2 very different books in 1.
I generally gravitate towards character driven books, but the amount of character development in the first half at times feels repetitive and cumbersome. The growth that you see throughout the characters and their relationships is lovely.
One of the reviews I saw said this books has elements of a thriller and that is 100% not true. The historical aspect of the story was my favorite, and I would have easily given that stand alone story a 5/5.
Not a huge fan of the 3rd person voice, but again the historical story within the book is fabulous, and worth the trudge through the first half it takes to get there.
