Surprisingly subtle.
I went in expecting a straight polemic against communism, but Orwell was surprisingly fair. Instead of just painting communism as eeevil!, he makes a point of distinguishing that ultimately, it’s the actors of a given system that determine how things play out.
No, the pigs aren’t inherently evil — the Old Major wanted a better life for the animals. As did Snowball. Indeed, whilst Snowball was around, things were better.
In the end, as a parallel between the enmity of Trotsky/Lenin and Stalin, it was self-interest and corruption that initiated a downward spiral. Napoleon, mendacious and sly Napoleon, was a source of poison that trickled down to his young, the other pigs and dogs.
