Powerful, entertaining, and thought-provoking
It is difficult to know where to start, because there are so many positive things about Pachinko and Min Jin Lee.
Let’s start off with the structure. This book is highly readable—there are no page long paragraphs, no jumbo sentences, packed with every vocab word the author knows.
Even though this book is long, it earns its length.
And this book has some tremendously exceptional quotes:
“They’d make a tasty broth from stones and bitterness.”
“The Lord forgives, but the world does not forgive.”
“Being a man means you know how to control your temper.”
“Fill you mind with knowledge—it’s the only kind of power no one can take away from you.”
Pachinko covers four generations of Koreans who eventually immigrate to Japan. Min Jin Lee pulls off the miraculous—she introduces the characters with perfect timing, making them memorable without overwhelming the reader. The characters are beautifully complex and imperfect, leading to riveting storylines with unexpected turns.
If you desire a little extra challenge, you can consider the Biblical names. Does each character live up to their given identity?
Oh my my...oh h*** yes! They did not cheap out on the narrator for the audiobook. It is Sandra Oh. This is the actress who plays Eve Polastri in Killing Eve!

I'm glad that you got so much out of this, Lisa!I agree that it is very readable. So much so, that even though it was a miss for me, the writing and the excellent narration had me read the entire 18 plus hours of a book that I wasn't that into.
Great review!
Bingo! I agree - this is a super book and now there are movies (not as good) - it was made into a serialized set of something for tv (I think) - People in my book group loved these. The characters in the movie did not fit the characters in my mind (from reading the book -- and from being a Peace Corps Volunteer in Korea for two years) so I did not follow this series. But the book is outstanding - my book group loved the book. After living there, I understood the hate and evil in the book that the Koreans had for the Japanese. And then the absolute shame of the young girl who was impregnated by the Japanese man. A very good review. peace, janz
Wonderful review, Lisa! It was a compelling read for me and several scenes have stayed with me years after reading it! So glad you enjoyed it too!
Glad you liked the book - I thought it was really wonderful. I also liked the recent Apple TV series based on the book. The series did make some plot and character changes, but I think that overall it remained true to the spirit of the novel.
