Couldn’t do it. DNF 20%

🫡 to anyone who finished this. I hear it gets better but I do not care enough to continue.

This is overwritten and flat. I couldn’t make it far enough to see if it’s actually ‘cerebral’ as some reviewers say, or if it’s more likely just try hard and pretentious.

Reading shouldn’t be an effort in proving how much smarter you are than your reader. It should be an invitation to share an experience and immerse the reader within it. Using odd descriptors, ten dollar words and third person present tense pov makes me think I’m reading a movie script or a story outline. I’m so detached, confused and also bored right now.

*************
Me getting approved for this ARC is the closest I’ve ever gotten to my teen fantasy of Keanu begging me to marry him.

I will Keanu, I willllll!

(Ok I’ll stop being cringe now)

***********

Keanu Reeves wrote a sci-fi book? Yes I will be reading this.

Totally! I’m trying to get my husband to accept him as a brother husband. Keanu doesn’t know of my plans yet.

Keanu took a red pill, got a co-author and wrote us a book.

RLbooks (in and out) What?! What a cool find!

He’s 59 and his gf is 51, that’s respectable and I like him more for not dating a 20 yr old. He could be a grandfather himself.

Kristina We can never tell my husband this. He would totally build a shrine and I’d have to live with it.

Kristina And Gretzky. He’s not dead tho.

message 25: by Sarah Mac (new)

Sarah Mac Gretzky would be allowed to use the Gordie chair with its Expos drapery. His aura of awesomeness would protect him.

The lady with white hair that the press shows him with is only 51? Huh. I was sure she was way older than him. Okay, now I'm back to crushing on him then. 😁

Kristina The ratings are not good for something still in ARC stage but I’m going in lol.

G_occasionally_reads Ugh. Sorry to hear you are not enjoying it.

message 42: by Sarah Mac (new)

Sarah Mac Third person present tense = instant DNF. I can’t stand that crap.

Kristina G_occasionally_reads wrote: "Ugh. Sorry to hear you are not enjoying it."

Ya I am definitely not the audience for this. It’s probably for people who like really depressing graphic novels and war time history. It’s like if someone wrote a really depressing version of captain america.

Kristina Sarah Mac wrote: "Third person present tense = instant DNF. I can’t stand that crap."

Me either, it’s like observational notes or someone narrating a documentary on animal planet

message 45: by Sarah Mac (new)

Sarah Mac It’s so annoying because Sarah Dunant has written a HF duo about the Borgias, which is a topic I love, but it’s written primarily in third person present & I’m afraid that will ruin it from page 1. 😢 Authors, please…I’m begging you. Stick to classic past tense narration, or even first person present (which I don’t esp like, but can tolerate if the author is skilled). Just stop this third present garbage.

message 46: by Kristina (new) - added it

Kristina Fr it’s the new edgy way of writing action books. but it ALWAYS seems awkward and wordy unless someone is a master at it. But this book, sentences will keep going to describe stuff that already been described to death. It’s like someone is describing the BRZKR graphic novels this book is based on to someone who can’t see them. Like audio description for the blind. It’s annoying when added to the extremely overly complicated writing style and the odd and pretentious word choices. It feels deliberately done to either impress or alienate so those who hate this shit can be later looked down upon as ‘not getting it’.
Anyway. I’m taking a break from it and only reading it to my husband to torture him.
