I agree with the general consensus that this is a well-written book. There's been many reviews already written about what the book is about so I'll just quickly note my reaction to her memoir. Deraniyagala takes you to some deep dark places and I think it's an important book about mental health, loss, and grief. Deep grieving isn't palatable to most of us. It makes us uncomfortable. Oftentimes we're tolerant and sympathetic up to a vague fixed point. ("It's been two years already"--that kind of thing.) I don't believe I like Sonali Deraniyagala. I find her spoiled, cold, not particularly nice. But who cares? I don't have to like her to find her memoir brutally frank and her candor thought-provoking. I hope this book proves cathartic for her. And though she'll never have "closure," I hope someday she will have another relationship and find some kind of love again.
