Read 2 times. Last read December 4, 2008 to December 31, 2008.

(B+) 78% | Good
Notes: Composed simply and scripture-like, it reads at times too much like a children's fable, but picks up steam by the end.

Diane Wallace Nice review, Jayson! :)

Jayson Thanks a lot Diane!

Rana⚡ Glad you liked it more than i did! I had to read it for school and felt like the execution & writing were so poor, even though the story itself was very exciting🤷

Thanks Rana! I can totally see how you'd find the writing and execution lacking. I don't think it appeals to everyone. Though it might be a matter of a poor translation, or translation in general. I'm sure everything reads better in its original language.

Rebecca Bowen This book was a tranquilizing read for me and the fable like structure and ending had me hooked until the end :)

That's great to hear Becks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yes, I think the style of writing has a lot to do with its appeal. It's an old-fashioned kind of storytelling I don't think is for everyone, but as you mention, it does create a calming effect for those appreciative of its steadiness.

Sana I found it really boring, unfortunately.

Jayson Sana wrote: "I found it really boring, unfortunately."

I can understand that, Sana. I found much of it boring as well, but for me the positives outweighed the negatives. Sorry it wasn't for you.

Katherine Hayward Pérez Great review Jayson! I read this years ago (before I was on Goodreads) and loved it.

Camila Jiménez Zambrano I read it like three years ago. It had some really good quotes, but everything was so bizarre that I couldn't say much, though I liked it

I'm glad to hear you liked it, Camila. Yeah, it is pretty bizarre when I look back on it. It's certainly a unique book in the modern context, which I think has much to do with its appeal.

OliveTree I have not read this but from the page and people's reviews, if you liked it you might also like The Murderer's Ape by Jakob Wegelius

Thanks, Alison! I haven't checked out the audiobook yet. I'll have to put that on my list :)

Thanks, Aizlyn! I agree, I enjoyed the storytelling too. So far, this is the only book of his I've read, but I'm open to reading more :)

YonnoMaus I read this when I was around 16yo I think. I don’t remember much about it except that I disliked it on an astoundingly visceral level. Don’t ask me why lol. I keep wondering if I will feel the same way reading it as an adult, and sometimes I think I should give it a re-read so I can at least answer people who ask why I didn’t enjoy it, but I just cannot get myself to pick it up. Glad you didn’t hate it though

Thanks! I can see where you're coming from, this book can be an acquired taste. Not every book's for everyone. If you do eventually reread it one day I'd be interested to see if you changed your mind at all, as you mention, since you're an adult now. Though, myself, I wouldn't want to reread something I didn't remember liking.
