When a book is described as heartbreaking, I rarely believe it but Elizabeth Gaskell’s story had me in tears as the story came to its conclusion. The hard lives of fishermen, the terror of the press gangs and the life-lessons learnt too late, all contributed to one of the great stories we are fortunate enough to be able to read or, in my case, listen to.
