I believe I am relatively familiar with history in general, and I'm usually not very excited about reading more about it. But this book was something else.
Beautifully written and easy to read, this book just made me want to know more and more about how the author thinks the world evolved to what it is today. Revolution by revolution, religion by religion, conception by conception, things were simplified and yet still maintained valid points - and it was never boring.
The best thing about it was that it actually made me think.
The author doesn't treat you as ignorant at all - he doesn't assume you know nothing but assume you know a lot and understand a lot, and doesn't lecture about anything, and that attitude makes the book a pleasure to read.
Just read it.

Just finished this. Couldn't agree with you more. This should be on everybody's reading list.

I haven't realized about what you pointed out rehearsing the fact that the author assumes that you know a lot, and you understand a lot. This comment was just clarifing!!! Thanks
Agree totally. Just read it and see what you think...the most interesting part of this book is ones own reaction to it.
I totally agree. I just completed the reading of the book. It is one of few books that make you think all the history and science of evolution in a different light.
I am enjoying it too. Why do the negative comments complain about not having enough proof? I think he makes the point that since we have very little proof we can imagine many possibilities....Is there something wrong with that! ?
Marvellous book written in a clear and simple way. Exciting and challenging. One of the books that must be digested !!!
I read this book because a friend wanted to discuss it with me. I found it a huge struggle and it has taken me 5 month to read, largely due to the fact that much of it bored me silly. I only persevered because the friend is waiting for me to finish. I loved the start, the fascinating accounts of the development of Homo sapiens. Some of the economic stuff I found mind numbing. Every time I was ready to give up completely there would be a nugget of interest. There are some interesting ideas and a sweeping assumption that the reader sees everything the same way as the writer because there is no alternative. Bits of it made me think and more of it helped me sleep!
