⭐⭐⭐⭐ ║ A fun, fast, and clever Discworld graphic novella that offers a wonderful bite-sized blend of Pratchett’s sharp satire, cheeky humor, and insightful storytelling. The Last Hero brings together plenty of familiar faces including the hilarious Cohen the Barbarian and his geriatric Silver Horde of heroes. The plot is delightfully absurd, with Cohen and crew giving the middle finger to their deific overlords and running into their “colleague” Evil Harry the Dark Lord along the way. Then, there’s the Apollo-style mission to save the world helmed by Leonard da Quirm, Carrot, and Rincewind. The simple plot keeps things tight and focused compared to some of Pratchett’s wild, chaotic tales that sometimes veer off course. The dialogue is a crack-up, the various jokes and parodies almost always land, and the artwork by Paul Kidby is amazing. The story’s themes are wonderfully explored, and the ending quickly ties everything together nicely. That said, The Last Hero’s length, graphic novella format, and overall PG-rated silliness make it feel like a children’s book. While this knocks it down a peg for me compared to my favorite full-length novels of Pratchett’s Discworld, he and Kidby crafted a quick, entertaining tale that I highly recommend to readers of any age.
