I've read four of Melville' other work, this is a bit different, but I can see if you've come to this book because of Reeves it might be a bit of a shock. First 20 pages were confusing AF due to lack of names for most characters and very fast switches between scenes. But after that, everyone gets a name and it settles down.
Overall, I did like it quite a lot. Once you get an idea of what's happening the changes in POV and scene changes work, it helps keep a sense of urgency while flashbacks/historical POVs help fill you in with the greater mystery and motivations in the present.
