Mere Christianity

After years of putting this book off, I finally picked it up. The amount of stars I have assigned it says enough about how well it was received.
Lewis spends the first section using rhetorical devices and logic to try to prove that religion is better than atheism. Then he jettisons all of that rhetoric and logic, takes the tennets of Christianity as given fact, and proceeds to deliver a mind-numbingly naïve justification for the reasons behind the religion of the Nazarene.
I'm disappointed that this is seen as such a stellar achievement of Christian thought. It was terribly weak, even for its time, and offers little to nothing besides pontifications about the already mystical—without the benefit of calling it so.
Overall, worth reading just to see how little has to be offered to be heralded as powerful amongst the religious. 1 star.

Just want to say that C.S. Lewis used to be a strong atheist, so he isn't being hypocritical when he talks about atheism. In addition, these are only his thoughts listed in the book, which means atheism was different from him than it is for you. Also, your either wrong or write so what does it matter if he wanted to live his life in Christianity rather than Atheism.

Keegan wrote: "these are only his thoughts...atheism was different from him than it is for you...your either wrong or write so what does it matter if he wanted to live his life in Christianity rather than Atheism."If he had maintained his religious belief privately, no one would be arguing with him years after his death.
Instead, he published a book and sold millions of copies. Some readers don't find the arguments compelling. Everyone indeed is free to live however they choose, including by pointing out that this book is not very good.
How about this? All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of yourself. It is the gift of God not by works lest any man should boast. That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in thine heart heart that God hath raised Him from the dead thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Children are cleansed from sin until the age of accountability, which varies, because of the blood of Jesus. The life of the flesh is in the blood. Jesus poured out His life on the cross. Without shedding of blood, there is no remission. O. T, sacrifices pointed to Jesus as the lamb of God that taketh away the sins of the world. He will do that for all who will come to Him. He lived a sinless life by choice, tempted as we are, yet without sin. It took His sinlessness to make Him worthy to die for us. Salvation demanded a sinless Savior, because a sinner could not be accepted by God. The innocent God Man suffered so we could be forgiven and have a relationship with Him. The trinity works together to fulfill His will. We have to have faith, confessing our need , believing in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus and receive Him and His free gift of salvation. We can’t earn it or get have Jesus in any other way. Jesus is The Way, The Truth and The Life. There is no other name under Heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. He that hath the Son the same hath the Father. And he who hath not the Son the same hath not the Father. Sin put Jesus on the cross. Unbelief sends a person to hell
Those who can not confess with their mouth because they don’t have a voice, God understands and their confession will still be accepted. God’s nature is to love, to give and to bless. When we come to Him, He makes us a new creation, gives us new desires, teaches us as we study His Word and helps us to obey, because He gives us the Holy Spirit to be with and in us
When I read it, I was frankly astounded that Lewis is considered one of the finest apologists. His so-called reasoning is embarrassingly bad.
My above review is not mainly from Romans. It is expressing mere Christianity however. It is about Jesus and what He did for us, how to be saved and know Him. Lewis was a sneaky one. He wasn’t one to express how he really felt about a lot of things. He was a devout Anglican and the most important beliefs about Christianity, I found, he didn’t believe. Let me share a couple of things. He didn’t believe the sacrifice of Jesus was enough. To believe in purgatory speaks for itself. He felt purgatory was a good thing for purification or cleansing. The blood of Jesus wasn’t sufficient for some people. They could stand at the door of Heaven , as it was explained, and be dressed in dirty clothes. Not wanting to enter until cleansed, the answer was purgatory. The blood of Jesus cleanses every true believer and at the moment of salvation we are declared to be the righteousness of God in Christ. We are one with Christ, united with Him, another way of saying one with Him. And it doesn’t have to be in the baptismal waters. We are saved and then baptized . It is a picture of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. He identified with us and then we identify with Him before others. Enough said!
